Women's Lacrosse Falls to Ursinus in Season Opener

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team battled the weather and the Bears today at Edith Robb Dixon Field, as the Cavaliers suffered a 15-8 loss to Ursinus College in the 2016 season opener for both clubs.

Five Cavaliers marked the scoring columns today, led by junior Katie Lasater's three goals and two assists.  Junior Jess Breuning and sophomore Sasha Wozniak added two goals apiece, while junior Allie Vallen paired a goal and an assist.

Defensively, the Blue and White caused 12 turnovers and scooped 20 ground balls.  Breuning recorded a game-high five ground balls to go with two caused turnovers and accounted for six of Cabrini's 11 draw controls.

Sophomore Jackie Neary caused three Ursinus miscues and scooped a pair of ground balls.

Junior goaltender Megan Barlow suffered the loss, despite recording eight saves and securing three ground balls.

The Blue and White ran to an early lead as sophomore Emily Crouse found Lasater for the season's first goal just over two minutes into the action.  Less than two minutes later, Lasater hit Breuning for an early 2-0 lead.

Ursinus got a goal back before Lasater's unassisted tally at the 21:36 mark.  The Bears netted four unanswered goals to build a lead they would not relinquish.  Vallen's unassisted goal pulled the Cavaliers to within 5-4, but again the Bears had an answer, posting back to back goals.

Lasater completed her hat trick with 5:27 left in the first half, before Ursinus pushed its cushion to 9-5 at the halftime break.

Wozniak got on the board with an unassisted goal in the opening minute of the second half, but Ursinus regained its momentum with four unanswered scores.  Breuning's second goal of the night momentarily stopped the run, as the Bears scored just 11 seconds later.

Following a 30 minute lightening delay, the Bears extended their lead to 15-7 before Lasater's pass found a streaking Wozniak for the sophomore's second tally of the season.

The Cavaliers attempted just 19 shots in the loss, with 13 on target.  Breuning's five shots led the club, while Lasater added four, one more than Vallen and Wozniak.

Sophomore Taylor DeBernardi led Ursinus (1-0) with five goals, while junior Lindsay Grabell paired two goal and four assists.  Senior goaltender Margaret Philbin recorded seven saves to earn the victory.

The Blue and White have a few weeks to regroup, as the team will make its annual training trip to Florida before visiting Haverford College on March 11 at 4 p.m.
