RADNOR, Pa. – For the first time in nearly two years, the Cabrini men's basketball team emerged from a game against Immaculata University with a good feeling. Tonight's wire to wire 83-72 victory over the Mighty Macs snapped a string of three straight losses to Immaculata.
The Cavaliers third consecutive win improved the club to 11-8 overall and 9-4 in Colonial States Athletic Conference action.
Four Cavaliers scored in double figures, with sophomores
Tyheim Monroe and
Deryl Bagwell going for 19 points each. Monroe added 17 rebounds for his 19th double-double of the season, making him one of just three players among all divisions with 19 double-doubles.
Bagwell paired his 19 points with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals in 32 minutes off the bench. Classmate
Jair Green hit 6-10 from the field, scoring 13 of his 17 points in the second half. Freshman
Ivan Robinson chipped in with 11 points, while senior
Ace Henry added eight.
Robinson scored six of his points in the opening three minutes, as the freshman connected on back to back three point plays, as Cabrini scored the first eight points of the night. Immaculata battled back before a Bagwell triple spurred Cabrini to a 12-0 run, extending its lead to 23-9 on Monroe's jumper with 9:18 left in the half.
The Mighty Macs pulled to within five points twice late in the first half before Monroe's offensive board and putback sent Cabrini into the halftime break with a 37-29 lead.
Just 90 seconds into the second half, Cabrini saw its lead sliced to four points. The Blue and White cushion swung between 4-8 points for the next several minutes, with Immaculata pulling to within three points for one possession.
Midway through the half, its seemed as though Immaculata had grabbed the momentum, as it pulled to within 55-53 and 57-55. On both occasions, Green had the answer, as his back to back buckets pushed the lead back to two possessions.
The Blue and White quickly regained control of the game with 9:12 to play, as it held the Mighty Macs scoreless for 2:36 and scored nine consecutive points to push its lead to 69-57 on a pair of free throws by sophomore
Kane McGovern.
Cabrini maintained its double figure lead for much of the final 7:11, never allowing Immaculata with eight points.
Junior Roy Ferrell Jr. led Immaculata (7-13, 6-7 CSAC) with 28 points and four steals, while senior Rodney Duncan paired 17 points and a team high nine rebounds.
Tonight's doubleheader also marked the third annual Cabrini Nation Night: #DoBlue event, sponsored by Cabrini Traditions. Both the Cabrini women's and men's teams wore their blue uniforms in front of the home crowd. Special commemorative #DoBlue t-shirts, rally towels and pendants were also handed out to students throughout the games..
The Cavaliers will look for their fourth consecutive win on Saturday, as they visit Centenary College (12-8, 8-5 CSAC). Game time is slated for 2 p.m. in Hackettstown, N.J.
Saturday's action will mark a special day for all of the CSAC teams, as the league will come together to Play 4 Jayden and JP, the children of Gwynedd Mercy men's basketball head coach John Baron. Jaylen and JP's mother is courageously battling Stage 4 pancreatic cancer and all 12 CSAC schools are teaming up to support these two deserving children.
A $2 admission charge will be required for all of Saturday's CSAC games, with all proceeds going directly to Jaylen and JP. For more information, check out the CSAC website at www.csacsports.org or follow the hashtag "#Play4JaylenAndJP".
