HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – After trailing by as many as seven points late in the first half, the Cavaliers outscored Centenary 45-34 in the second half to score a 78-71 victory this afternoon.
With their fourth consecutive win, Cabrini improved to 12-8 overall and 10-4 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
Three Cavaliers scored in double figures, led by sophomore
Tyheim Monroe, who narrowly missed his second 20-20 game of the season. The sophomore paired 18 points and 20 rebounds for his Division III leading 20th double-double is as many games.
Fellow sophomore
Jair Green led all scorers with 21 points, his sixth 20 point effort in his last seven outings, to go with three blocked shots and three steals. Freshman
Ivan Robinson added 17 points, four assists and three steals in the win.
Cabrini jumped to an early lead as junior
Ryan Charity found Monroe for a lay-up, giving the Blue and White a 19-9 lead at the 12:09 mark. The Cyclones responded with a 12-0 run to reclaim a slim lead. A three pointer and lay-up on consecutive possessions gave Centenary its largest lead of the day at 35-27 with less than three minutes left in than half.
Green's jumper pulled the Cavaliers back to within 35-33 but a lay-up by Centenary's Myles McLeod pushed Cabrini's deficit to 37-33 after 20 minutes of action.
Robinson connected on two of his four three pointers in the opening 90 seconds of the second half, giving the Cavaliers a momentary slim lead. Following a pair of Centenary free throws, Charity gave the Blue and White the lead for good at 41-40. The junior's bucket sent Cabrini on a 12-3 run, culminating with Robinson finding Monroe for a lay-up and a 52-43 withjust north of 14 minutes to play.
Free throws by Green and Monroe expanded the lead to a game high 60-47 midway through the half.
Trailing 70-60 with three minutes to play, Centenary mounted a comeback, as Zachary Duymich and Rashaan Spencer connected on back to back three pointers. Sophomore
Deryl Bagwell split a pair of free throws before Monroe found Green for a lay-up to push the cushionback to 73-66 with 96 secodns on the clock.
While the Blue and White hit 5-8 from the free throw line over the game's final 96 seconds, the Cavaliers secured the win on the defensive side of the floor. Cabrini held Centenary to just four field goals in the final 2:30 of the game.
Green and Robinson led the second half comeback, as the duo combined for 27 of Cabrini's 45 second half points, while Monroe added seven points and 11 boards.
Senior
Ace Henry chipped in with nine points, while Charity finished with eight points and five rebounds in his first start of the season. Bagwell added five points and a career high four steals.
Duymich finished with 14 points for the Cyclones12-9, 8-6 CSAC), while Anthony Bailey paired 11 points and seven boards. McLeod and Paul Jones chipped in with nine points each.
The Blue and White will travel down the Main Line on Wednesday, as it looks to avenge an earlier loss to Rosemont College (11-10, 9-5 CSAC). The clubs will meet at Rosemont's Alumnae Hall at 8 p.m.
Cabrini rallied from a 17 point first half deficit to build a slim lead with just four minutes to play. Rosemont responded with a 9-0 spurt to go up 90-83 with 72 seconds on the clock. The Cavaliers final push culminated with a
Robbie Brosh IV three pointer in the final seconds as Cabrini came within 97-95, but it was too little to late.
