Game Recap: Lacrosse (Men) |

Late Surge Seals 12-5 Win over No. 9 Ohio Wesleyan

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini men's lacrosse team scored its second top 10 victory of the season today at Edith Robb Dixon Field, as the No. 8 Cavaliers scored a 12-5 win over the visiting Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops.

The win improves the Blue and White to 5-0 on the season, while the No. 9 Bishops fall to 5-2.

Six Cavaliers recorded goals in today's victory, led by freshman Jordan Krug, who netted a season high four goals.  Fellow rookie Matt LoParo recorded his second impressive in as many games this week, adding a game high five points on two goals and three assists.

Junior Evan Downey and freshman Sean Wagner added two goals each, while senior Ethan Heisman and sophomore Ben Junior added one each.  Downey and Heisman also posted an assist each.

Senior Matt Ward anchored the Blue and White's defensive effort, causing a program record eight turnovers, breaking John McSorley and Jeff Moore's previous mark of seven.  Classmate Austin Edelman added two of Cabrini's 14 forced turnovers on the day.

Senior Brian Kittredge secured a career best seven ground balls, three more than sophomore goaltender Tyler Morrell.  Downey, Heisman and junior Steve Halko scooped three ground balls each.

Senior Chris Schneekloth went 12-20 at the faceoff spot, including winning seven of eight faceoffs in the fourth quarter.

Morrell earned his fourth consecutive victory, recording nine saves.

Despite both teams sporting high powered offenses, the first quarter was a defensive battle.  OWU got on the board first, scoring 4:30 into the game.  Midway through the stanza, Downey hit Krug to even the score.  Just 61 seconds later, LoParo and Wagner hooked up to give the Blue and White a 2-1 lead it ould not relinquish.

The Cavaliers extended their scoring streak into the second quarter, notching four consecutive goals. Just over a minute into the period, LoParo netted an unassisted goals.  Less than a minute later, senior Kyle Bush found Krug for his second of the afternoon.

LoParo connected with Krug to complete the rookie's hat trick at the 10:53 mark of the second quarter.  Downey's unassisted goal midway through the period pushed Cabrini's lead to a commanding 6-1. OWU added a late goal, as the Blue and White carried a 6-2 lead into the halftime break.

The Bishops pulled within 6-3 with 6:04 left in the third quarter, before Krug's fourth goal of the afternoon pushed the cushion back to four with 2:31 left in the third.

Freshman Max Tennant's second goal of the game again cut Cabrini's lead to three goals, but an 87 second span of the fourth quarter removed any doubt about the game's outcome.

LoParo's unassisted tally gave the Blue and White an 8-4 cushion at the 8:44 mark.  Just 43 seconds later, the rookie found Heisman in front of the OWU net.  Heisman passed the good fortune to Downey seconds later, as the senior hit Downey for his 10th goal of the year and a 10-4 lead with 7:17 to play.

Heisman then hit Wagner to give the Cavaliers an 11-4 advantage with just 3:34 to play.  OWU claimed their only faceoff win on the ensuing faceoff and took advantage of a violation to score a goal eight seconds later.  Junior's third
goal of the campaign dashed any hopes of a Bishops' comeback.

While the Blue and White recorded 41 shots on the day, including 23 on goal, it was the team's defensive discipline that went a long way to the victory.  Cabrini committed just one penalty, allowing the nation's third ranked man-up offense just one opportunity, during which Ward caused a turnover.

Cabrini also forced the Bishops into 23 turnovers, nearly double their season average of 11.86, which ranked seventh in Division III.

Tennant led OWU with two goals, while senior Ben Danieli caused two turnovers and secured four ground balls.  Junior goaltender Ben Rigger paired 11 saves and four ground balls in the loss.

The Cavaliers have a few days to rest and regroup before traveling to Owings Mills, Md. next weekend for the Green Turtle Classic at Stevenson University.  Cabrini will face the host No. 19 Mustangs (2-3) on Friday at 8 p.m. before meeting No. 3 RIT (4-0) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
