RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team hosted Division II Philadelphia University today at Cabrini Field, where the Blue and White split a doubleheader, topping the Rams 5-2 in game one, before falling 9-0 in game two. Following today's split, the Cavaliers improved to 9-10 on the year.
Fast forward to the second inning in game one, with two outs and junior
Lindsay Savar on first base, sophomore
Emily Smull doubled to right center. Savar advanced to third on Smull's double and scored on a throwing error by the short stop.
In the top half of inning number four, a Rams single up the middle tied the game at one.
The Cavaliers fought back in the fifth inning, scoring four runs on four hits and one error. Junior
Taylor Mack reached first on an error by the pitcher and advanced to second on sophomore
Christine Ferraro's bunt single.
Junior
Amber Dietrich followed with a single to center field, deep enough to score Mack and advance Ferraro to third. Senior
Kaitlyn Cooper stepped into the batter's box and launched a three run home run over the left center field wall, marking the senior's second tally on the year. A pair of strike outs and an infield pop fly ended the inning.
The Rams scored once more in the seventh inning but sophomore
Jess Giordano shut the Rams down the rest of the way. Giordano improved to 5-4 in the pitcher's circle after tossing seven innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits. The sophomore also stuck out a pair of Rams in the win.
Cooper went 2-3 at the plate with a game high three RBI, while six other Cavaliers notched a hit. Dietrich's RBI single to center field was Cabrini's only other RBI in the victory.
Pitching was the difference in game two, as Stephanie Pepper struck out nine batters, surrendered just one hit and held the Cavaliers scoreless through five innings of action.
Philadelphia University scored one run in the second inning, one run in the third inning, six runs in the fourth inning and added one more run in the fifth inning. The Blue and White failed to score in the fifth inning, triggering the eight run rule.
Giordano tallied Cabrini's only hit in the loss. Junior pitcher
Kiley Sharp made her first start of the season, tossing five innings. The junior fell to 1-1 on the year after surrendering four earned runs with one strikeout.
The Blue and White steps back into conference action tomorrow, as the Cavaliers travel to Scranton, Pa. for a doubleheader against Marywood (10-8, 7-1 CSAC). Game time is set for 3 p.m.
