SCRANTON, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team has been on a tear of late, as the Blue and White has won seven of its last eight games, following today's 8-3 and 8-4 wins over Marywood. The Cavaliers improved to 11-10 overall and 8-0 in the CSAC with today's victories.
Cabrini scored a run in the first inning of game one to open the day's scoring. With one out, junior
Amber Dietrich singled up the middle and advanced to second as senior
Kaitlyn Cooper drew the base on balls. Freshman
Marissa Alpaugh followed with a single to left field, plating Dietrich. A strike out and a foul out ended the top half.
The Blue and White scored four more runs in the second inning on four hits, one walk and one error. With two outs and junior
Taylor Mack on second, Cooper singled up the middle, as Mack came home to score.
Alpaugh doubled to right center field the next at bat, Dietrich, who reached on an error by the short stop, and Cooper crossed home plate. Alpaugh made her way over to third on junior
Lindsay Savar's single and later scored on sophomore
Jess Giordano's single up the middle. That would be all the runs the Cavaliers could muster in the inning.
Marywood scored a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second inning on one Pacer hit, cutting the deficit to three runs.
In the top half of the sixth inning, the Blue and White extended its lead to five again, after scoring a two runs on a pair of hits, two walks and one error. A Savar single through the left side of the infield plated Cooper and Dietrich.
Marywood got a run back in the bottom half of the sixth but that would be all it would score the rest of the way.
Cabrini added one more run in the seventh, as Cooper's single through the left side scored Mack.
Giordano improved to 6-4 in the circle, after tossing seven innings, striking out three Pacers and surrendering just two earned runs.
Alpaugh, Cooper and Savar combined for seven of the Cavaliers' eight RBI. Alpaugh led the way with three RBI, while Cooper and Savar each notched a pair.
In the nightcap, Cabrini opened the scoring in the top half of the third inning. Cooper reached first on an infield single and later scored on Savar's single to right center.
The Pacers took the lead in the bottom half of the third inning, after scoring two runs on three hits and one error.
The Blue and White offense took a 4-2 lead in the fourth. Freshman
Darian Caputo singled to center field to start the inning and later crossed home plate on Dietrich's single to center field. With one out and the bases juiced, Cooper tripled to right center field, plating Caputo, Ferraro and Dietrich. A line out and strike out ended the inning.
Marywood scored one run in the bottom half of the fourth inning but Cabrini answered back in the top of the fifth. Sophomore
Sarah Beckner's double to center field was deep enough to score sophomore
Brittany Smith.
Marywood scored once more, in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Cavalier defense stepped up and held the Pacers scoreless the rest of the way. The Blue and White scored once in the sixth and two more times in the seventh to secure its victory.
After tallying 13 hits in game one, the Cavaliers combined for 18 in the nightcap. Savar and Giordano each recorded three hits in the win, while Cooper led with a game high three RBI.
Junior Kylie Sharp improved to 2-1 in the pitcher's circle, as the junior threw seven innings, stuck out one Pacer and surrendered just three earned runs.
The Cavaliers host the Cairn University Highlanders (0-18, 0-8 CSAC) in a CSAC doubleheader tomorrow at Cabrini Field. First pitch is 3 p.m.
