RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team welcomed Widener University to Cabrini Field today, where the two teams split a pair of games. Cabrini earned a 4-3 comeback victory in game one, before falling 9-8 in the nightcap.
After a scoreless first inning, sophomore
Jess Giordano opened the second inning with a solo home run to left field, marking her third round tripper on the year.
Widener evened the score in the third inning, as the Pride crossed home plate on an infield error. A pair of hits and one error in the fifth inning gave Widener a 3-1 lead.
The Blue and White answered back in the sixth, as the Cavaliers tallied a pair of runs on one hit. With two outs in the inning, Giordano drew the walk. Sophomore
Brittany Smith entered the game to pinch run for Giordano and crossed home plate on junior
Lindsay Savar's two run home run to left center field, her third homer on the season.
Widener was shutout in the seventh, leaving a window of opportunity for the Cavaliers in the bottom half. Junior
Amber Dietrich notched a double to open the inning, while classmate
Taylor Mack followed with an infield single, advancing Dietrich to third on the throw. Freshman
Darian Caputo ended the game, as the rookie's sacrifice fly scored Dietrich.
Savar led the Cavaliers with two RBI, while Caputo and Giordano each tallied one. Seven Cavaliers earned a hit in the win, as Dietrich notched her fourth double on the year.
Giordano pitched a complete game for the Blue and White, and in doing so, earned her ninth win on the season. Giordano held the Pride to just three runs, with none earned, on eight hits.
As was the story in game one, the second game also came down to the wire.
Widener scored the game's first four runs in the first three innings but Cabrini got two runs back in the bottom half of the third inning to keep within striking distance. Cooper singled up the middle, while Giordano followed with a single to second base, advancing Cooper to third.
Smith entered the game to pinch run for Giordano and forced an infield error, as a pickoff throw went off line. Smith reached second on the error, while Cooper scored. A few batters later, freshman
Marissa Alpaugh's double plated Smith.
Widener scored a run in the fourth inning and three in the fifth inning to take an 8-2 lead.
With the pressure on in the fifth, the Blue and White rallied for four runs on five hits, one walk and one error. With two on and one out, freshman
Sarah Beckner singled, plating Giordano. The following at bat, Beckner and Alpaugh crossed home plate on a Dietrich single. Sophomore
Emily Smull cut the deficit to 8-6, as Dietrich scored on the sophomore's single. A fly out and strike out ended the inning.
Widener extended its lead to 9-6 in the sixth inning, with one run on two hits and one walk. In the bottom half of the sixth inning, Cabrini scored a pair of runs on one hit, one walk and two errors.
With one out and Giordano on third, Alpaugh singled to left field, scoring Giordano. Later in the inning, Beckner scored on an infield error.
Junior
Christine Ferraro drew the walk to start the bottom half of the seventh inning but a fly out and a pair of groundouts ended the game.
Alpaugh went 4-4 and recorded two RBI, while Dietrich went 1-2 and also tallied a pair of RBI in the loss.

Kaitlyn Hohman and freshman
Jenna Rodriguez combined to surrender for eight earned runs in the pitcher's circle, with Sharp taking the loss.
Cabrini will honor Cooper, its lone senior, during Friday's regular season home finale against Notre Dame (Md.) University (3-11, 7-15 CSAC). First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m. at tCabrini Field.
