RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini softball team closed its home schedule today with a pair of wins over Notre Dame of Maryland University, including the program's first no hitter since 2011. With today's 13-0 and 10-2 wins, the Blue and White improve to 19-14 overall and 15-3 in the CSAC.
Today's games also marked the final home appearance for the Cavaliers' lone senior,
Kaitlyn Cooper. In her four years donning the Blue and White, Cooper has led the Cavaliers to back to back appearances in the CSAC championship game, while earning All-CSAC recognition three times and an NFCA All-East Region Third Team honor in 2015.
The senior started 146 of her 159 career games and owns a career batting average of .366 with 173 hits, including 16 home runs, and 116 RBI.
Sophomore
Jess Giordano and freshman
Jenna Rodriguez shut down the Gators' offense in the opener, as the duo combined for the first Cavalier no hitter since Marcelle Crist and the Blue and White shut out Philadelphia Biblical University on April 27, 2011.
Giordano improved to 10-5 in the circle, as the sophomore pitched three innings and tallied five strike outs. Rodriguez tossed two innings and retired all six Gators, while also adding a strike out.
The Cavaliers' offense was hot in game one, as the Blue and White out hit the Gators 17-0.
Giordano's double in the first inning scored fellow classmate
Christine Ferraro to open the scoring. Cooper crossed home plate on junior
Lindsay Savar's sacrifice fly to center field. Two batters later, Giordano crossed home plate on freshman
Taylor Franchville's single through the middle. Following junior
Amber Dietrich's single to left field, junior
Taylor Mack singled down the left field line, plating freshman
Marissa Alpaugh.
In the second inning, a pair of sacrifice flies from Giordano and Savar netted a pair of runs for the Blue and White.
Dietrich opened the third inning with a solo home run to left field, her second round tripper on the year. A pair of singles and an error loaded the bases. The Blue and White scored a run, as Cooper's fly ball to center field was deep enough to score Mack. Freshman
Darian Caputo crossed home plate on an infield error, while Ferraro crossed home plate on sophomore
Emily Smull's single to left field the next at bat.
The Cavaliers recoded five hits to extend the lead to 13-0 in the fourth inning. Cooper tallied an RBI single mid-way through the inning, as Mack crossed home plate. Rodriguez's single to right field plated Caputo, while sophomore
Taylor Gallagher's single to right field the following at bat scored sophomore
Brittany Smith.
Cooper went 2-3 in the win and added a pair of RBI and runs scored, while Giordano and Savar also earned two RBI each.
Cabrini pressed on in game two, combining for 14 hits in the win.
Giordano opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI ground out.
In the second inning, Alpaugh sent a pitch over the left field wall, as the rookie circled the base paths for the fourth time this season. A Dietrich double scored Franchville. Dietrich crossed home plate on sophomore
Victoria Hall's infield single.
With the Cavaliers leading 4-0 in the third, the Gators got a pair of runs back to cut the deficit in half.
The Blue and White extended its lead to 6-2 in the bottom half on Savar's two run home run. The junior's homer marks the fourth of the season and ties Alpaugh for a team high.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Blue and White notched four runs in the fifth inning on six hits. Savar crossed home plate on Hall's sacrifice fly to center field, while junior Alexandria Romos' single plated Alpaugh and Dietrich a few batters later.
Giordano stepped into the batter's box, following Coopers walk, and ended the game with an RBI single to center field, as Ferraro crossed home plate to trigger the eight run rule.
Hall, Savar, Giordano and Ramos led the Blue and White offensively with a pair of RBI each. Ferraro notched a team high three hits and also came around to score twice.
Junior
Kiley Sharp earned the win in the circle, after throwing three innings, striking out three Gators and allowing just one earned run.
The Blue and White has little time to rest, as it travels to Hackettstown, N.J. tomorrow to face Centenary College (6-19, 6-10 CSAC) in a CSAC doubleheader. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
