Men's Soccer Opens Season With OT Win at King's

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Cabrini men's soccer team needed seven extra minutes today, but after the final whistle, the Cavaliers had claimed a thrilling season–opening 2-1 overtime victory at King's College.

A King's foul in the 18-yard box gave Cabrini a penalty kick in the 97th minute.  Senior A.J. Bishop stepped to the spot and sent the ball toward the net, but a diving save by Monarch's goaltender Owen Geedey briefly maintained the tie. Fortunately, the ball bounced back to Bishop, who put the ball in the net to seal the victory.

The senior's game-winning goal was his second of the match, as he also beat a defender for the game's first goal, just two minutes into the action.

Despite surrendering six first half corner kicks, the Cavaliers maintained their first half lead as senior goaltender C.J. Serratore notched a pair of saves.

King's got on the board in the 57th minute, but could not take advantage of six more corner kicks in the second half.  The Blue and White created a scoring chance in the 90th minute, as senior Ben Roda's corner kick glanced off Bishop's head missing its intended target.

Cabrini turned up the pressure in the overtime, outshooting King's 6-1 and earning a pair of corner kicks in the nearly seven minutes of overtime.

Bishop accounted for eight of the Cavaliers' 13 shots on the day, including five shots on target.  Freshman Christopher Araujo added two shots in his collegiate debut.

Cabrini will head to the University of Scranton on Sunday, where it will face the Royals (1-0) at 2pm.
