RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball team suffered its first Colonial States Athletic Conference loss of the season tonight, as it fell to No. 20 Neumann 84-76 at Nerney Field House.
With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while the Knights improved to 5-0 in league play and 11-0 overall.
Four Cavaliers scored in double figures on the night led by junior
Deryl Bagwell's 23 points, to go with seven rebounds. Fellow junior
Tyheim Monroe extended his double-double streak to 38 games with 17 points and a season-high 20 rebounds.
Senior
Ryan Charity and junior
Kane McGovern added 10 points each off the Blue and White bench, while sophomore
Ivan Robinson chipped in with eight points.
The teams played a very close first half with Neumann controlling the scoreboard for much of the period. The Knights led by as many as seven points in the opening 20 minutes, but the Cavaliers would not let them pull away.
The Blue and White pulled within 39-38 with 24 seconds left in the half after five consecutive Charity points, but a Cabrini foul and turnover allowed Neumann to score the final three points to carry a 42-38 lead into the half.
Much of the second half played out like the first, with Neumann maintaining a slim lead. Each time the Cavaliers were poised to pull ahead, the Knights had an answer.
Cabrini's deficit hovered between 3-7 points until a 5-0 spurt extended the Knight's lead to 65-54 with 5:14 to play.
Offensively, the Blue and White never found its rhythm in the second half, as it shot just 32.6% from the field, including 4-19 from three point range, an committed 10 of its 14 turnovers.
Conversely, the Knight connected on north of 45% from the field after the break to maintain their lead and hit 11-18 from the free throw line to extend the cushion in the game's final minutes.
Senior Carl Wallace led the Knights with 16 points and 20 rebounds, while junior Tyaire Hudson tallied 20 points.
The Cavaliers will look to rebound on Saturday, when they welcome Centenary University (8-4, 4-1 CSAC) to Nerney Field House.
Game time is scheduled for 3pm, as the second half of a women's and men's CSAC basketball double header. The Cabrini women (5-7, 3-0 CSAC) will open the action at 1pm, as they host Cedar Crest (2-8, 0-4 CSAC).
