Men's Basketball Holds on for 75-70 Win at Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball team saw its 15 point second half lead whittled away, but in the end the Cavaliers earned a hard fought 75-70 victory at Gwynedd Mercy University.

With the win, the Blue and White improved to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Sophomore Ivan Robinson led the Cavaliers with 21 points, including 4-6 from three point range and 5-7 from the free throw line. Junior Tyheim Monroe paired 19 points and nine rebounds with a career best four steals.

Fellow junior DeVahnte Mosley added 15 points in his first start of the season, while senior Ryan Charity chipped in with 11 points off the bench.

Despite struggling with his shooting touch, junior Deryl Bagwell made his imprint on the game with six rebounds, five assists and five steals.

The Cavaliers built an early lead but could not create any significant distance between themselves and the Griffins.   That separation came midway through the first half, as a pair of Charity free throws capped a 6-0 run that gave the Blue and White a 28-17 lead with 6:42 left in the half.

GMercyU pulled within five points, but Bagwell hit Mosley for back to back lay-ups to extend the Cabrini lead to 40-28 at the half.

An early Robinson three pointer pushed the lead to a game-high 15 points in the first minute of the second half. The Blue and White cushion remained in double figures for the first seven minutes of the stanza, before the Griffins began to chip away.

GMercyU whittled the lead down to 63-61 with 5:10 to play.  The Griffins completed their comeback, tying the score at 65 with 2:10 to play.  Robinson put the Cavaliers with a three pointer on their next possessions, giving Cabrini a lead it would not relinquish.

The Griffins responded with a bucket of their own, before Robinson hit Mosley for a three pointer to give Cabrini a 71-67 lead with 55 seconds to play, the team's final field goal attempt.

The Blue and White held on for the win by going 4-6 at the free throw line in the game's final minute, including a pair of Robinson free throws the pushed the lead to five with three seconds to play.

Cabrini forced GMercyU into 21 turnovers and held the Griffins to just 5-19 from three point range. Conversely, the Blue and White committed just six turnovers and recorded a season high 26 made free throws in the win.

Courtney Cubbage led the Griffins (10-3, 4-2 CSAC) with 24 points and 16 rebounds, while Arron Goodman added 12 points off the bench.

The Cavaliers will return to Nerney Field House on Wednesday, when they host Clarks Summit University (1-12, 0-6 CSAC).  Game time is slated for 7pm.
