Field Hockey Suffers Last Second Loss on Senior Day

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini field hockey team celebrated the careers of its 13 seniors today, but suffered a heartbreaking loss to Alvernia University in the regular season finale for both teams.

The Blue and White closed its regular season with a 7-9 record, while the Golden Wolves improved to 12-7.

The majority of the opening 35 minute period was played in the middle of the field, as the teams combined for just five shots and only one on target.

The Cavaliers forced six first half penalty corners, but could not solve the Alvernia defensive unit.

The Golden Wolves turned up its pressure after the halftime break, outshooting the Cavaliers 8-1 in the second half.

Senior goaltender Taylor Bookman kept the score sheet clean, posting each of her six saves in the second half.

With the fans preparing to settle in for overtime, the Golden Wolves tallied the only score of the day, as junior Taylor Dorrin found senior Malorie McCoy with just nine ticks left on the clock.

Senior Sara DeVita recorded two of the Cavaliers four shots on the day.

McCoy notched four shots for Alvernia, while sophomore goaltender Emma Beamesderfer made one save to earn the shutout.

Prior to the opening whistle, Cabrini head coach Jackie Neary presented gifts to her 13 seniors in appreciation for their career contributions.

The class of Alexandra Swallow, Maddy Worley, Jackie Neary, Alexia Paglia, Victoria Marchiani, Ryan Taylor, Sara Johnsen, Emily Town, Megan McLoughlin, DeVita, Jess Tennett, Brittany Smith and Bookman have led the program to 44 victories, including a 24-4 record in conference games and two CSAC championships. Over their careers, they have accumulated a total of 75 goals, 55 assists and 322 saves.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Wednesday, when they host Marywood University in the semifinal round of the 2017 CSAC Tournament.  The opening whistle is slated for 6pm at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

Worley netted a pair of goals, while Neary paired a goal and an assist to lead Cabrini to a 40- victory at Marywood when the teams met during the regular season.
