Men's Basketball Opens Season with 82-68 Win in Battle of Eagle Road

ST. DAVIDS, PA – Four Cavaliers scored in double figures tonight, as No. 23 Cabrini claimed victory in the Battle of Eagle Road with an 82-68 win at Eastern University.

The Blue and White's season-opening win marked its ninth win in the last 10 meetings in the rivalry series and second consecutive victory.

Sophomore Keith Blassingale led a balanced attack with a career high 19 points, including four three pointers. Senior Tyheim Monroe picked up where he ended last season, pairing 18 points and 22 rebounds.

Junior Ivan Robinson chipped in with 16 points, while senior Deryl Bagwell added 13.

The Cavaliers struggled early, as Eastern took control of the scoreboard in the opening minutes. The Eagles led by as many as seven points eight minutes into the action.

An Eastern dunk gave the Eagles a 25-19 lead with eight minutes left in the half, when Cabrini turned the game around. The Cavaliers used a 13-2 spurt to take the lead, as Blassingale's triple gave Cabrini a 32-27 lead with three minutes to play in the stanza.

After 20 minutes, Cabrini held a slim 36-33 lead despite shooting just 32.5% from the field and 7-14 from the free throw line.

Eastern kept the game tight in the second half, as the second period featured five tied and six lead changes.

The game's final tie came with 6:24 to play, as Bagwell found Robinson for a three pointer, leveling the score at 60-60. One minute later, a Bagwell lay-up gave the Cavaliers a 62-60 cushion, one it would not relinquish.

Eastern split a pair of free throws before back-to-back three pointers from Blassingale gave Cabrini a 68-61 lead with four minutes to play.

The Eagles never got closer than five points in the closing minutes, as the Cavaliers connected on nine of its final 10 free throw attempts.

The Blue and White found its shooting touch in the second half, hitting 15-31 from the floor and 11-13 from the charity stripe, as the quartet of Blassingale, Robinson, Monroe and Bagwell combined for 38 second half points.

Victor Pena led Eastern with 14 points and 11 boards, while Gabe Perez added 12 points.

The Cavaliers will head to Fredericksburg, VA this weekend, where it will compete in the University of Mary Washington Hyatt Place Tipoff Tournament. Cabrini will open the two-day event against Denison University (1-0) at 5pm on Saturday.
