Union, NJ - The Cavaliers were handed their first loss of the season this afternoon as Kean University captured the 72-65 victory.
The Cavs were led by sophomore
Meghan Matthews who paced the offense with 17 points and chipped in four rebounds and three blocks. Junior
Nomi Washington finished with 13 points while freshman
Kate Lannon paired 12 points with six rebounds.
Despite a lower shooting percentage than the Cavs, the Cougars forced 23 turnovers, resulting in 22 points and 14 fast break points.
Cabrini opened the game with a quick 8-2 run off of back-to-back baskets from Washington, but Kean countered with an 8-3 run of their own. Up just 11-10, a layup from Lannon followed by a pair of free throws from senior
Gaby Jones pushed the Blue and White lead back to five with just over two minutes to go in the first quarter.
The Cougars again responded as freshmen Emily Dominguez and Casey Filiault paired a three ball and a lay in to bring the hosts to within a basket at the end the first quarter.
A back and fourth second quarter, which saw neither team hold larger than a three point lead, gave way to the third quarter. The Cavs picked up two quick baskets from senior
Sabrina Hackendorn and freshman
Kate King to retake the 37-34 lead.
Sisters Marajiah and Miesha Bacon, both juniors, responded with a three and a jumper to swing the lead back in favor of the Cougars. After swapping baskets, Maraijah Bacon and freshman Lorenzah Hammer converted consecutive layups to push the Kean lead to seven with 1:52 left in the third.
A three from Washington followed by a pair of freebies from Matthews with two seconds left in the quarter cut the Cougars lead to just 48-46 heading into the final stanza.
A 7-2 run from Cabrini to open up the fourth quarter, capped by a three from freshman
Lexi Edwards, swung momentum back in favor of the Blue and White as they held a 53-50 lead with 8:08 to play.
After the Cougars tied it back up at 53, the two teams swapped baskets until a layup from Miesha Bacon put Kean up 58-56 with four minutes left. The Cougars would not relinquish that lead as they were able to fend off the Cavaliers' second straight comeback attempt and hold on for the 72-67 victory.
The Cougars' Marajiah Bacon finished with a game high 31 points and 10 steals to pick up the double-double. Sister Miesha Bacon added 14 points and four rebounds.
With the loss the Blue and White move to 2-1 on the young season. They will next take the hardwood when they host the University of Scranton on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 6pm.
