Late Robinson 3 Gives Cavaliers 71-67 Win over Scranton

RADNOR, PA – Junior Ivan Robinson drained a three pointer with 13 seconds left to break a 67-67 deadlock, as Cabrini topped Scranton 71-67 at Nerney Field House.

The Cavaliers improved to 3-1 overall, while snapping their three game losing streak to the Royals.

All five of the Blue and White starters scored in double figures in the victory, with senior Tyheim Monroe leading the way with 19 points and 16 rebounds.  Classmate Deryl Bagwell stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Robinson and freshman DJ Smith added 12 points each, while sophomore Keith Blassingale chipped in with 10 points.

Neither team could really find its offensive rhythm in the opening 20 minutes, a frame that features six lead changes and two ties.

While the Cavaliers built an early lead, the Royals took its largest lead of the night with 4:02 left before the half on a three pointer from senior Kevin Doolan.

Despite shooting just 12-38 from the field and 3-12 from the three point line in the first half, a Monroe lay-up gave the Blue and White a slim 30-29 lead at the half.

Both teams found their respective shooting touches during the break, as they combined for shoot north of 54% from the field in the second half.

Both teams exchanged the lead in the first nine minutes of the second half, as a Doolan jumper gave Scranton a 48-45 lead with 11:44 to play.  It would be the last possession the Cavaliers trailed, as a Robinson triple evened the score at 48 on Cabrini's next possession, .

Three minutes later, a Monroe steal and fast break dunk capped a 10-2 Cabrini spurt, giving the Cavaliers a 55-50 lead with 8:32 to play, their largest lead of the night.

Cabrini could not put Scranton away, as the Royals tied the score at 59, 61 and 63. A Bagwell jumper put the Cavaliers ahead 67-63 with 2:33 to play, but Doolan's third three pointer of the night pulled Scranton within 67-66.

After an empty trip for the Blue and White, a Cabrini foul sent Doolan to the line, where he split a pair of free throws to tie the game at 67 with 37 seconds to play.

The Cavaliers did not call a timeout on their next trip, but Bagwell found Robinson for the eventual game-winner, sending the Nerney Field House crowd into a frenzy.

Leading by three, Cabrini committed a pair of fouls, sending Scranton back to the free throw line. The Royals missed the front end of a 1-and-1 before Bagwell split a pair of late free throws to seal the victory.

Junior Jack Connelly led the Royals (2-4) with 18 points, including 4-5 from three point range. Senior Drew Schankweiler posted a double-double with 17 points and 11 boards, while Doolan finished with 16 points.

The Cavaliers will return to action on Saturday, when they open Colonial States Athletic Conference play with a visit from Immaculata University (3-2, 1-1 CSAC).  Tip is scheduled for 3pm at Nerney Field House.
