Men's Basketball Opens CSAC Play with 107-97 Win over Immaculata

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini offense exploded for 107 points in today's Colonial States Athletic Conference opener. The Cavaliers needed every one as it held off a furious second half comeback to score a 107-97 win at Nerney Field House.

The Blue and White's third consecutive win improved the club to 4-1 overall, while the Mighty Macs fell to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in CSAC play.

Six Cavaliers scored at least eight points in the win, with senior Tyheim Monroe leading the way with season high 31 points and 15 rebounds, marking his fifth double-double of the season. Freshman DJ Smith hit 5-7 from three point range for 17 points.

Senior Deryl Bagwell also notched a double-double, posting 13 points and 12 rebounds to go with three assists and three steals. Junior Mike Doyle matched Bagwell with a career high 13 points on 5-5 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line.

Cabrini took control of the action early in the game, as it used a 6-0 spurt to turn a 14-11 deficit into a 17-14 lead, one it would not relinquish.

The Cavaliers used runs of 6-0 and 7-0 to extend their cushion, but 10 consecutive points over a three minute span late in the first half pushed the lead to 45-28 on a jumper by freshman Barry Quartlebaum with 3:35 left in the half.

The Blue and White also recorded the final seven points of the half, as freshman Brice Parks collected an offensive rebounds and hit a jumper at the buzzer to send Cabrini into the break with a commanding 60-35 lead.

The Cavaliers built their halftime lead on the strength of 52.5% shooting from the field, while holding the Mighty Macs to just 10-38 from the floor and 2-10 from three point range.

Immaculata wasted little time beginning its comeback in the second half, as the Mighty Macs chipped away at their deficit bucket by bucket. The team whittled its lead down to 78-69 on sophomore Jeff Powell-Young's lay-up with 9:09 to play. Cabrini immediately responded, as junior Ivan Robinson hit Smith for a three pointer.

Minutes later, the Cavaliers pushed the lead back to 15 points before sophomore Jordan Ambrose knocked down back to back threes for Immaculata, once again, slicing its deficit to nine points.

Both clubs hit free throws on their next possessions, but again it was a Smith triple that pushed Cabrini's lead back to double figures, as the rookie collected a Monroe pass and nailed a three with 4:35 to play.
The Blue and White sealed the win at the charity stripe, where it went 8-9 over the game's final 2:35.

Immaculata found its shooting touch during the halftime break, as it shot 56.4% from the field in the second half, including 7-12 from beyond the arc. The Cavaliers, meanwhile, shot just 14-38 after the break and 4-13 from three point range.

Senior Chris Lawhorn paired eight points and eight boards for Cabrini, while sophomore Keith Blassingale matched the senior with eight points.

Ambrose le the Mighty Macs with 25 points and nine rebounds, while classmate Will Chapman added 21 points and 12 assists, while hitting 11 of 12 attempts from the free throw line.
