ASTON, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball paid a visit to No. 20 Neumann University tonight looking for an upset and a share of first place in the Colonial States Athletic Conference.
After 40 minutes, 12 ties and 12 lead changes with neither team leading by more than six points, the Cavaliers fell to 18-6 overall with a 73-69 loss to the Knights.
The Blue and White falls to 14-3 in the CSAC, one game ahead of Gwynedd Mercy for second place in the league standings, with only Saturday's meeting with the Griffins remaining in the regular season.
Junior
DeVahnte Mosley led Cabrini with 18 points. Fellow junior
Tyheim Monroe paired 17 points and 18 rebounds, moving into fourth place on the CSAC's career rebound list with 1,018 boards.
Senior
Ryan Charity chipped in with 10 points, while junior
Deryl Bagwell added nine points and seven rebounds.
The Cavaliers and Knights played a nip and tuck first half, with neither team leading by more than three points until junior
Kane McGovern's steal and lay-up gave the Cavaliers a 24-19 lead with 6:21 left in the first half.
The Blue and White lead swelled to six points, as Monroe found freshman
Keith Blassingale for a three pointer on Cabrini's next possession.
Three of the game's 12 ties came in the final five minutes of the stanza before Charity's putback gave the Blue and White a 36-34 lead at the break.
The second half began as the first ended, with three ties in the first five minutes of the half. While the Cavaliers held a slim lead for much of the first half, Neumann held a one possession cushion for much of the second.
Cabrini broke a 58-58 tie with a Mosley triple at the 6:39 mark, but the Knights responded with six consecutive points. Monroe and Bagwell responded with back to back buckets for a 65-64 with three minutes to play.
The Cavaliers posted just four points in the final 3:00, with Bagwell's triple with 13 seconds to play marking the only field goal. Meanwhile, the Knights sealed the game at the charity stripe, connecting on 5-6 in the final 27 seconds.
Three Neumann (22-2, 16-1 CSAC) seniors posted double-doubles in the win. DeShawn Lowman led the way with 24 points and 13 rebounds, while Darian Barnes added 17 points and 15 rebounds. Carl Wallace tallied 17 points, 13 rebounds.
The Cavaliers will close the regular season on Saturday, as they host Gwynedd Mercy (19-5, 13-4 CSAC). Game time is slated for 4pm.
