Cavaliers Fall to Griffins in CSAC Championship 67-49

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team had its four year CSAC championship streak snapped this afternoon, falling to the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy by a final score of 67-49 in the 2017 CSAC title game.

The Blue and White struggled to shoot the ball all game, hitting 26.1% from the field on the day and just 16.7% in the fourth quarter.

Senior Renee Oliver ended her career with an outstanding performance, posting a career high 18 points and 15 rebounds. Over her four years, the Cavaliers won 83 games, including a 56-8 mark against conference opponents, as well as three CSAC championships and one NCAA tournament victory. The Scotch Plains, NJ native totaled 536 points and 561 rebounds throughout her four years.

Freshman Meghan Matthews was a key contributor off the bench, as she scored 11 points and hauled in five rebounds.

The Cavaliers fell behind in the early going as Gwynedd Mercy jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but four straight points from Oliver knotted things back up at six apiece. After swapping baskets, the Blue and White took a 10-9 lead off of a pair of Matthews' free throws with 2:19 left in the first. The freshman extended the Cavs lead to four, thanks to an and-one finish.

The Griffins evened things up at 15 as junior Bianca Adams hit a layup just over a minute into the second quarter. After swapping the lead three times over the next five minutes of action, the Griffins started to find their touch.

Sophomore Jayla Green hit a jumper from the right side, which was the beginning of an 8-2 run for the Griffins to close out the half with a 29-23 advantage.

Out of the break, sophomore Nomi Washington opened the scoring for both teams with an easy lay in and cut the Griffins' lead to just four in the process. The four point deficit would be the closest the Cavs would come the rest of the game.

Griffins' senior Charlotte Kucowski answered with a three from the left side, extending the Cavs deficit to seven points. This trend would continue as the Blue and White was unable to get any key stop that would allow it to build momentum and mount a comeback.

The Cavaliers hit just three field goals in the fourth quarter and struggled for, seemingly, the first time all season at the free throw line, connecting on 5-12 attempts. The Griffins took advantage of the Cav's struggles, as they ended the game with a 12-3 run.

Gwynedd Mercy had five players score in double figures, highlighted by championship game MVP senior Nicole Dombroski's 13 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks. The victory gives the Griffins their first CSAC championship since the 2012-13 season.

With the win, Gwynedd Mercy earns he CSAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which will begin next weekend.
