Breuning Reaches Century Mark in Women's Lacrosse Win over Capital

ST. PETERSBURG, FL – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team evened its record at 1-1 with today's 12-11 victory over Capital University.

Senior Jess Breuning paired a goal and an assist, entering the Cabrini women's lacrosse record book.  With an unassisted goal in the second half, Breuning joined Cabrini's 100 career goal club.

Sophomore Avery Murphy led the Cavaliers with five points on four goals and an assist, while classmate Liz Hoeffner recorded a hat trick.

Fellow senior Allie Vallen also tallied two points, as seven Cavaliers marked the scoring column in the nonconference win.

Senior goaltender Megan Barlow posted nine saves to earn the win, while junior Jackie Neary caused three turnovers. Neary and Hoeffner were also joined by junior Gabby Lee with four ground balls each.

Capital opened the scoring, as Kara Hines netted the first of her foru goals on the day.  The Cavaliers responded with goals from Murphy and Hoeffner.  The Crusaders evened the score seconds later before Hoeffner put Cabrini ahead with her second goal of the game just seven minutes into the action.

With the score tied at 3-3, Murphy, Vallen and Hoeffner recorded three unanswered goals to give the Blue and White a 6-3 cushion midway through the period. The Crusaders turned to their defense to get back into the game.

Capital kept the Cavaliers scoreless over the next 20:20 and scored five unanswered goals to take an 8-6 lead with 25:31 left in the game.

The Blue and White responded with four unanswered goals of its own.  Freshman Lauren Hughes recorded her first career goal, followed by goals from junior Sasha Wozniak, Neary and Breuning's century goal, as Cabrini rebuilt a 10-8 lead with 17 minutes to play.

The Crusaders pulled within one goal three times over the game's final 15:26, but the Cavaliers never allowed Capital to even the score. Murphy scored goals to maintain the two goal cushion, including the eventual game-winner with 4:19 to play.

Hines led Capital (0-1) with four goals, while Katheryn Walton notched three goals. Makenna Ozenghar paired two goals and two helpers, while goaltender Maddie Wilson recorded 24 saves.

The Blue and White will return to action on March 7, when they head to Ewing, NJ to face No. 5 The College of New Jersey (1-0).  Game time is scheduled for 7pm.
