CLERMONT, FL – The Cabrini softball team rebounded from yesterday's disappointing loss to Wartburg College, but could not find enough offense to upset No. 10 Alma today, as the clubs played a doubleheader in Clermont, FL.
The Cavaliers lost the opener 8-0 before falling on the short end of a 1-0 pitcher's duel.
The Scots grabbed an early lead in the opener, plating two runs on two hits in the bottom of the first, and never looked back. Alma crossed the plate in each of the game's five innings.
The Blue and White struggled to find its offense against Alma pitcher Katie McClure. Cabrini mustered just two base hits on a single in the second by junior
Jess Giordano and classmate
Emily Smull single in the fourth.
The Cavaliers drew four walks in the loss, with three coming in the top of the third. Senior
Taylor Mack, junior
Chrissy Ferraro and sophomore
Marissa Alpaugh drew bases on balls to lead the bases, but the Blue and White left the bags full.
Giordano suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs on nine hits.
Junior
Jenna Rodriguez toed the rubber for Cabrini in the nightcap, and the junior delivered. One day after struggling in relief against Wartburg, Rodriguez allowed one earned run and scattered seven hits in a seven inning complete game, her best outing in the Blue and White.
Alma managed multiple hits in the first and fifth innings and stranded seven runners on the day.
The game's lone run came in the fifth, as Cassidy Tucker singled and advanced to third on a pair of sacrifice bunts. Tucker then scored on a single by Chelsea Schweiger.
That was all the offense Scots' hurler Morgan Stratton needs, as the senior All-American held Cabrini to a Giordano single in the fourth and one in the sixth of the bat of freshman
Alexandra Schell.
The Cavaliers will have Tuesday off before returning to action on Wednesday, when they face Otterbein University (5-1) for the second time this week and Waynesburg University (1-3).
