RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team held on for a 12-10 win over Marywood University today at Edith Robb Dixon Field in the Colonial States Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
With the victory, the Blue and White improved to 3-2 overall and extended its CSAC win streak to 41 games, dating back to a 16-5 loss to Marywood on March 17, 2012.
Sophomores
Avery Murphy and
Liz Hoeffner led the way for the Cavaliers as the duo combined for 10 points. Murphy paired four goals and 10 draw controls, while Hoeffner added three goals, two assists, four draw controls and three ground balls.
Junior
Jackie Neary scored twice, while classmate
Sasha Wozniak tallied a goal and two helpers.
Senior
Jess Breuning earned game high honors with four caused turnovers and scooped three ground balls, while senior
Megan Barlow paired five saves and four ground balls to earn the win.
The Cavaliers jumped to an early lead, as freshman
Lauren Hughes found Murphy at the 26:02 mark. The Pacers evened the score three minutes later. Thirty seconds later, Neary put Cabrini ahead for goodwith a free position shot. Hoeffner connected with Murphy to give Cabrini a 3-1 lead, marking the only back to back goals of the first half.
The teams alternated goals over the final 21 minutes of the first half, as Breuning, Hoeffner and senior
Jen Robinson marked the scoring column.
The Blue and White outshot the Pacers 20-8 in the opening 30 minutes, but held a slim 6-4 lead at the halftime break.
Cabrini built some space between it and Marywood early in the second half, scoring three of the period's first four goals. Murphy and Wozniak combined for the three goals, as the Blue and White pushed its lead to 9-5 with 23 minutes to play.
With just south of 17 minutes to play, Hoeffner returned to the scorebook, converting a Wozniak pass into an 11-7 lead for the Cavaliers. The sophomore closed Cabrini's scoring five minutes later, with an unassisted goal to build a 12-7 lead.
Hoeffner's final tally proved to be an important one, as Marywood scored the game's final three goals.
The Cavaliers outshot the Pacers 37-17 on the day and won 19 of the game's 24 draws.
Junior Sam Bussinelli and freshman Gwyneth Gleason led Marywood (3-3, 0-1 CSAC) with three goals each. Senior Natalie Burke paired four ground balls and four caused turnovers, while classmate Lauren Smith tallied 14 saves and 10 ground balls in the Pacers' cage.
The Blue and White will step out of conference play on Wednesday, as it welcomes Haverford College to Edith Robb Dixon Field. The nonconference tilt is slated for 4pm.
