RADNOR, PA – Sophomore
Avery Murphy scored her sixth goal of the game 1:27 into overtime, as the Cabrini women's lacrosse team topped Haverford 12-11 today at Edith Robb Dixon Field. The win marked the Blue and White's first victory over the Fords in the teams' seven all-time meetings.
The Cavaliers' third consecutive victory improved the club to 4-2 overall, while Haverford fell to 4-3 and saw its four game win streak come to a halt.
Today's game had a little bit of everything, as Cabrini built a seemingly comfortable lead, saw it slip away and made a late comeback before Murphy ended the Cavaliers' first overtime game since 2007.
The Cavaliers built a 6-2 halftime lead on the strength of a dominant first half performance. Cabrini outshot the Fords 18-6 in the opening 30 minutes.
Murphy scored three of her goals in the first half and joined fellow sophomore
Liz Hoeffner with goals in a span of six seconds late in the half to give the Blue and White its four goal cushion at the break.
The cold nor the halftime break slowed the Cabrini offense, as Murphy and Hoeffner added unassisted tallies early in the second half, pushing the Cabrini lead to 8-2 with 24 minutes to play.
The Blue and White then lost its way, as Haverford mounted an incredible comeback.
The Fords netted nine of the game's next 10 goals in a 17 minute span to build an 11-9 lead of their own. Haverford recorded just 12 second half shots, but made the most of each one, including converting six free position goals.
Cabrini took advantage of a late Haverford yellow card, as senior
Allie Vallen netted a woman-up goal with 2:53 left in regulation. Murphy controlled the ensuing draw and went straight to the net, tying the score at 11 with 2:43 to play.
Both teams had chances to end the game in regulation. A free position attempt for the Cavaliers resulted in a turnover, while senior goaltender
Megan Barlow came up with a big save as the Fords attempted a free position shot in the game's final minute.
Senior
Sasha Wozniak also had a late shot that bounced off the post.
Cabrini won the opening draw of overtime, but subsequent turnovers by both teams put the ball back in the Blue and White sticks. Junior
Jackie Neary fired a shot at the net, but Haverford's junior goaltender Rachel Romens came up with the save.
After a loose ball scrum, the ball bounced to Murphy who scooped the ball and beat Romens for the game winner.
Vallen and Hoeffner finished the day with two goals each, while Wozniak and Neary paired a goal and an assist each.
Senior
Jess Breuning added five ground balls, three draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. Neary caused a team high four turnovers, while Murphy controlled six draws. Barlow paired four saves and four ground balls in the victory.
Senior Sarina Manetta, sophomore Allie Gibbons and freshman Maeve Gaffney scored three goals each for the Fords, while freshman Olivia DiRienz added a pair of free position goals.
Senior Claire Cote tallied five ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Romens suffered the loss despite nine saves and five ground balls.
The Cavaliers have little time to enjoy today's win, as they will return to CSAC action on Thursday, when they visit Rosemont College (0-3, 0-1 CSAC). Game time is slated for 4pm.
