CHESTER, PA – The Cabrini softball team returned to action after a 20 day layoff, visiting Widener University for a nonconference doubleheader. Five errors doomed the Cavaliers in a 6-2 loss in the opener, while the Blue and White mustered just four base hits in the night cap, falling 10-2.
Game One
Cabrini took an early lead, as junior
Jess Giordano's double to left center scored freshman
Alexandra Schell in the top of the first. The lead was short-lived, as the Pride evened the score in the bottom of the frame.
Widener took a lead in the bottom of the second inning and added runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Meanwhile, the Cavaliers struggled to get the big hit to plate a run. Cabrini loaded the bases in the second and had runners on first and second in the fourth, but came away empty on both occasions.
Cabrini added a run in the top of the sixth, as senor
Amber Dietrich doubled before scoring on Schell's single down the left field line.
The Cavaliers recorded 11 hits, but stranded 10 runners in the loss. Schell led the way with three hits, while Giordano, Dietrich and senior
Taylor Mack added two hits each.
Giordano suffered the loss in the circle, despite seven strikeouts, as Widener plated five earned runs on eight hits.
Game Two
The Blue and White struggled to find its offense in the night cap, as Widener pulled away late.
The Pride took an early lead, plating a pair of runs on one hit and an error in the first inning. The Cavaliers cut their deficit in half in the third, as junior
Victoria Hall scored on a Widener miscue.
Widener got the lead back with a solo home run in the bottom of the third, but senior
Lindsay Savar had an answer, clubbing her first round tripper of the season over the center field wall.
Unfortunately, Cabrini would record just one more hit, as the Pride found its offense. Widener added three runs on three hits in the fourth before closing the game with three runs on four hits in the sixth.
Senior
Taylor Gallagher suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs on three hits n 3.1 innings. Junior
Emily Smull surrendered three earned runs on seven hits in relief.
Cabrini (1-9) will look to regroup before hosting Keystone College (3-5) on Saturday in the Colonial States Athletic Conference opener for both teams. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for noon at Cabrini Field.
