ALLAMUCHY, NJ - The Cavaliers held a 4-2 lead heading into the seventh inning, but were unable to hold on as the Cyclones tagged the Cavaliers' relievers for seven runs across the final two innings to take a late 9-4 lead that they would not relinquish.
Starter
Jake Dohar pitched in and out of trouble in the first three innings as he issued five free passes to go along with two wild pitches. Despite the early control issues, Dohar turned in an overall solid effort on the mound as he lasted six innings, allowing just four hits and two earned runs. Moreover, three of the Cyclones' four hits off of Dohar came in the first inning.
Shaun Stackhouse (2-5, 2R),
Colin Birzes (3-4) and
Joe Aurite (2-3, 1RBI) all put together multi-hit performances for the Blue and White, while
Dylan Butler and
Alex Del Giudice both picked up an RBI apiece.
Despite the rocky first inning that featured a double, two singles, a wild pitch and passed ball, Dohar did a nice job of limiting the damage as he induced a grounder to end the inning and stranded two men on base.
The Cavs would get one back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a sac fly off the bat of Butler to score Stackhouse.
The Blue and White took the lead in the third as Stackhouse opened things up with a double down the right field line. An error by the first baseman allowed
Tyler Norris, the games next batter, to reach and put runners on first and second with nobody out. After a Butler fly out that moved Stackhouse to third, Norris swiped second for his 11th stolen base of the season, but an errant throw down by the catcher on the play allowed Stackhouse to score. A single from Birzes made it first and third with one out when Del Giudice reached on a fielders choice to score Norris and hand the Cavs the 3-2 lead.
After back-to-back 1-2-3 innings from Dohar, the Cavaliers tacked on another thanks to a bases loaded walk that scored Butler and made it 4-2.
The seventh and eighth innings would prove to be tough ones for the Blue and White as Centenary would rally to tie the game in the seventh and take a commanding 9-4 lead in the eighth. The late lead would stand as Centenary's Joe Frankosky and Ryan St. John would retire the next six Cavs in order to finish off the late game comeback.
The Cyclones received big performances from Nick Daniele and Kevin Sensale who combined to go 4-8 with three runs and five RBI's.
The Blue and White will next take the diamond when they travel to Neumann University this Saturday for a double-header beginning at noon.
