ASTON, PA - The Cavaliers record fell to 9-12 overall (3-8 CSAC) after dropping both games of Saturday's double header against Neumann by scores of 8-2 and 8-2. The offense managed just 10 total hits between both games while the Knights took advantage of starters
Josh Breittholz and
Ryan Givens.
Game One: Neumann 8, Cabrini 2
Neumann struck early as they picked up all eight runs between the second, third and fourth innings to put the Cavs in an early hole. Solo shots in the second and third innings, followed by an RBI double from Cody MacNair, quickly staked the Knights to a 3-0 lead.
The Cavs would respond, however in the top of the fourth as
Tyler Norris started things off with a single though the left side. After another single from
Dylan Butler,
Alex Del Giudice laid down the sac bunt to move both runners into scoring position.
Joe Aurite plated both base runners with a single to right center to cut the deficit to 3-2. Unfortunately, that would be all the Cav's offense would muster as Knights' starter Zach Youngberg would settle into a groove.
Neumann would do the majority of their damage in the bottom of the fourth as they piled on five runs thanks to two Cavalier errors in the inning.
Breittholz's outing was finished after the fifth frame as the junior exited after allowing 11 hits and eight runs, although only four of those were earned. His counterpart, Youngberg, went six innings, allowing four hits and two earned to pick up his third win of the season. Youngberg currently sports the lowest ERA in the conference with a 0.82 mark across 33 innings.
Offensively, the Cavs were led by Aurite who went 2-3 on the day with the only two RBI's, while Butler and Norris were the other Cavs to record a base hit.
Game Two: Neumann 8, Cabrini 2
In what had to have felt like deja vu for the Cavaliers, the Knights pushed across all of their runs in the first, third and fourth innings to again take an 8-2 victory.
Givens, who toed the rubber in game two, was tagged for eight hits and seven earned runs across just 3.2 innings
The Blue and White did stake their pitcher to a first inning lead thanks to an RBI single from Butler that scored
Shaun Stackhouse.
After Neumann knotted things up in the bottom of the first, the Cavs retook the lead in the top of the second courtesy of an RBI single from Stackhouse.
The Knights, however would take a commanding lead in the bottom of the third after back-to-back doubles followed by a walk, single and an inside the park homerun from Duncan Balara quickly gave Neumann the 6-2 lead.
The Cavs would threaten in the top of the fourth as Stackhouse and
Casey Plunkett stood on second and third, respectively, but a pop up off the bat of Norris allowed the Knights to escape unscathed.
Neumann would tack on the game's final two runs in their half of the fourth to push the score to 8-2.
Mike Kaczenski and
Andrew Del Giudice came on in relief in games one and two, respectively and combined to throw 3.1 innings and allow just one hit.
Butler led the offensive charge in game two as he finished 2-3 with an RBI. The junior is currently hitting .347 on the season with 19 runs batted in.
Cabrini will finish off the three game series with Neumann as they host the Knights on Tuesday, April 18th at 3pm at Cabrini Carroll Field.
