RADNOR, PA - The Blue and White dropped their seventh consecutive game Saturday afternoon as Gwyneddy Mercy swept the three game series against the Cavaliers. A rain soaked afternoon didn't slow either offense down as the two team combined to score a total of 28 runs, as the Griffins took game one by a 7-2 final and pulled out a dramatic 10-9 come-from-behind victory in game two.
Game One: Gwynedd Mercy 7, Cabrini 2
Ryan Givins got the nod as the game one starter and battled throughout, but was ultimately strapped with the loss. The tall righty threw all seven innings for the Blue and White, including four innings after being struck by a comebacker on the leg, but gave up six earned on 10 hits.
Griffins' starter Nick DeRitis also went the distance as he allowed two runs (one earned) on nine hits and picked up two strikeouts.
Shaun Stackhouse and
Erick Vicario both turned in multi hit performances in game one, finishing 3-4 and 2-3, respectively.
Dylan Butler and
Alex Del Giudice picked up the two RBI's for the Cavs. Butler's RBI raised his season total to an even 20 on the year.
The Griffins kicked off the scoring in the top of the first with a sac fly to give them the early 1-0 lead. The Cavs would quickly respond, however as they pushed across their only two runs in the bottom of the first. A double from Stackhouse, who promptly advanced to third off of a wild pitch, gave the Cavs an early runner in scoring position. After
Tyler Norris reached on an error by the shortstop, Butler drove home Stackhouse with a sac fly to center. A groundout from Del Giudice was all Norris would need to score the Cavs second run of the inning.
The Blue and White carried their 2-1 lead into the top of the fourth until Gwynedd pushed across two runs off of two singles to retake the lead 3-2.
The Griffins would add to their lead in the fifth and sixth inning to coast to a comfortable 7-2 game one victory.
Gwynedd Mercy's 3-4-5 hitters went a combined 5-10 with five RBI's and four runs scored.
Game Two: Gwynedd Mercy 10, Cabrini 9
As mentioned, game two featured late game heroics from both teams, but the Griffins ultimately came out on top with a hard fought 10-9 victory.
Cavs' starter
Jake Dohar lasted four innings and allowed seven earned runs off of nine hits. The freshman's ERA has risen more than two points over his last two appearances as it now stands at 5.75.
Andrew Del Giudice came on in relief of Doahr to start the fifth inning and was cruising until the games final frame.
After a four run top of the first from the Griffins, the Cavaliers answered in a big way as they put up six runs in the bottom of the first to take the 6-4 early lead. Norris' first home run of the season and a bases clearing three RBI double from Michael Mescia highlighted the Cavs huge response.
The Griffins pushed across one in the third to draw to within one run, 6-5. Cabrini clung to their 6-5 lead until Gwynedd Mercy pushed across two in the fifth to grab the 7-6 lead.
The never ending pendulum that is momentum shifted back in the Cavs favor in the bottom half of the frame as a one out
Joe Aurite walk got things started. A sac bunt off the bat of
Vince Gares moved Aurite into scoring position. Following a walk from
Casey Plunkett,
Kevin Glynn delivered a clutch two out two RBI double that plated both Aurite and Plunkett and netted the Cavs the late 8-7 lead.
A sac fly from Norris in the sixth cushioned the Cavaliers lead as they now led 9-7 heading into the games final frame.
As mentioned, Del Giudice had been cruising in relief up until this point when the Griffins' Ryan Keen delivered a two run shot to right center to even things at nine a piece. A single off the bat of Josh Lopez, four batters latter, gave the visitors all they would need to escape game two with a come-from-behind victory.
After the two game sweep, the Cavaliers' record falls to 9-16 overall and 3-12 in the CSAC. The Blue and White will aim to turn things around when they travel to Penn State Abington on Tuesday, April 25. First pitched is slated for 3:30pm.
