Diamond Cavs Can't Hold Off Eagles, Lose 8-3

ST DAVIDS, PA - The Cabrini baseball team dropped their eighth consecutive contest this afternoon as the Eastern Eagles used a four run fifth inning to secure the victory on their home field. The Cavaliers used seven pitchers to get through nine frames, but Ryan Givens (1IP, 5H, 3ER, 1K) was ultimately saddled with the loss.

Michael Rodriguez got the nod as the starter for the Blue and White and cruised through two innings of work as the lefty faced eight batters and allowed just one hit.

Vince Gares pushed across the first run for either team with a sac fly to center to score Joe Aurite in the top of the second.

The Eagles would respond in the top bottom of the third, however as a double off the bat of Timmy Gorton evened things at one a piece. Andrew Boykin followed suit as he too doubled to plate Gorton and give Eastern the early lead.

A leadoff single from Colin Birzes in the top of the fourth got things rolling for the Cavs as they looked to pick up where they left off last inning. A single from Dylan Butler followed by a balk from pitcher Kyle Daddario put runners on second and third with nobody out. Aurite evened things at two with a sac fly to score Birzes. Gares netted his second RBI of the day with a single to center to hand the Cavs the 3-2 lead. The Eagles pitching stymied the Cavs offense the rest of the way as the Blue and White managed just two hits over the remaining five innings.

Eastern would take a 6-3 lead in the fifth as they pushed across four runs off of five hits. They would add a single run in the sixth and seventh to cap the scoring at 8-3.

Birzes (2-3, 1R, 1BB) and Butler (2-3, 1BB)  both turned in multi-hit performances on the day to pace the Cavs' offense while Gares (1-3, 2RBI) and Aurite (1-2, 1RBI, 1R) drove home the three runs for the Blue and White.

Josh Freed earned the victory for the host Eagles as he came on for an inning of relief and picked up two strikeouts. Eastern's bullpen tossed five innings of shutout ball and recorded four strikeouts along the way.

With the loss the Cavaliers' record drops to 9-17 overall (3-12 CSAC). They will next travel to Scranton, PA on Friday for first game of a three game series against the Marywood Pacers (10-19, 5-10). Game time is slated for 3pm.
