IMMACULATA, PA – The Cabrini softball could not find its offense today, as the Cavaliers suffered a pair of losses at Immaculata University.
Today's 4-0 and 6-0 losses dropped the Cavaliers to 11-5 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference and 13-19 overall. With just six conference games to play, Cabrini sits in fourth place, one game behind the Mighty Macs (19-13, 14-4 CSAC) and one game ahead of Cedar Crest (21-10, 12-6 CSAC).
Cabrini mustered just three hits in the opener, posting sole base knocks in the first, third and fourth innings.
Immaculata jumped ahead in the first inning, as it opened the frame with three consecutive singles. The Mighty Macs plated two runs in the second and a single run in third.
Juniors
Chrissy Ferraro and
Alexandria Ramos joined sophomore
Marissa Alpaugh with base hits in the loss. Junior
Jess Giordano matched a season high with seven strikeouts, while allowing three earned runs on 11 hits.
Jessica Bormann led the Mighty Macs in the circle and at the plate, scattering three hits, while going 3-4 with two RBI.
Game two saw Cabrini junior
Emily Smull and Immaculata's Michaela Petito were engaged in a pitcher's duel until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Mighty Macs finally got to Smull.
Immaculata recorded five singles and took advantage of a pair of Cabrini errors to break a scoreless tie with a five run fifth. The Mighty Macs tacked on another run in the sixth, while holding the Blue and to just one hit over the game's final two innings.
Smull went 3-3 at the plate and suffered the loss in the pitcher's circle, while Alpaugh added two of Cabrini's eight hits in the nightcap.
Abigial Carter sparked the Mighty Macs, going 3-4 with two runs scored, while Petito recorded six strikeouts to earn her 10th win of the season.
Today's doubleheader also marked the Cavaliers' and Mighty Macs' annual cancer awareness game. Since 2014, the teams have engaged in the cancer awareness games and postgame picnic. Former head coach Mitchell Kline was integral in beginning the tradition, which has now taken on additional meaning since Kline's passing in September.
The Cavaliers will return to action on Tuesday, as they host Eagle Road rival Eastern University. First pitch of the nonconference doubleheader is slated for 3pm at Cabrini Field.
