SCRANTON, PA - The Cavaliers strung together three hits and four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, including a homerun from
Alex Del Giudice, but ultimately fell to the host Marywood Pacers by a 13-5 score. Marywood racked up 16 hits, including two doubles, two triples and two homeruns to pull away from the Blue and White.
Josh Breittholz got the nod as the game one starter for the Cavaliers and lasted four innings as he surrendered nine earned runs on 10 hits. The junior picked up his team leading 26th strikeout of the season in the lossl. Salvatore Manello earned the victory for the Pacers as he tossed six innings and allowed five earned.
Tyler Norris once again paced the Cavalier offense as the sophomore finished 3-3 on the day with one run scored, marking the second time the junior has recorded three hits in a game on the season.
Dylan Butler and
Vince Gares also turned in multi hit performances as the duo finished 2-5 and 2-4, respectively. Butler also secured his team leading 21st RBI on the season. As mentioned, Del Giudice (1-3, 1R, 3RBI) delivered the big blow in the sixth inning with his first homerun of the season, a three run shot to right center field.
The Pacers jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first as they used three hits, highlighted by a homerun, to push across four runs. They added three more in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 7-0 and put the Cavs in an early hole.
The Blue and White would get one back in the bottom of the third, however as a double down the line from
Colin Birzes (1-4, 1R, 1RBI) plated
Shaun Stackhouse (1-5, 1R) and gave the Cavs their first run of the game.
A run in the third, two in the fourth and one more in the fifth further cushioned the Pacers lead as they extended it to an 11-1 margin.
A late rally from the Cavs cut the lead to 11-5 as Norris led off the inning being hit by a pitch. A stolen base from Norris and a Birzes walk put runners on first and second with nobody out for Butler who promptly singled to left to knock in Norris. Del Giudice then stepped up and delivered his first homer of the season to clear the bases and cut the lead down to 11-5. Unfortunately, that is as close as the Cavaliers would come as Pacers' reliever Justin Perez shut the door with three innings of three hit ball.
The Blue and White threatened in the eighth and ninth innings as they left runners on base in both, but ultimately couldn't pull any closer.
They will look to avenge their game one loss as they host the Pacers for a double dip tomorrow beginning at noon.
