Softball Finds Offense in Sweep at Clarks Summit

CLARKS SUMMIT, PA – The Cabrini softball team scored a pair of wins today at Clarks Summit University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference doubleheader that was rescheduled from Saturday.

The Blue and White downed the Defenders 10-0 and 9-1 to improve to 7-11 overall and 5-1 in the CSAC.

The Cavaliers got their offense going early, as 11 players stepped into the batter's box in the top of the first inning.  The Blue and White took paired three hits, three walks and two Clarks Summit errors to plate six runs in the frame.

Freshman Alexandra Schell recorded two of the hits, posting a leadoff triple and an RBI double, while senior Amber Dietrich added an RBI double.

Junior hurler Jess Giordano struggled with her control in the bottom of the first inning, as the Defenders loaded the bases on a walk and two hit batters. Giordano pitched herself out of trouble, recording two of her six strikeouts to end the threat.

Cabrini increased its lead in the second, as senior Taylor Gallagher drove in Giordano with a single to left.  Two batters later, the Blue and White added two runs, as Gallagher and fellow senior Lindsay Savar scored on a Clarks Summit error.

The Defenders threatened again in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with no outs, but Giordano was up to the task. The junior punched out the side to maintain the shutout.

Cabrini added a run in the top of the fifth, as junior Sarah Beckner's single to center scored classmate Emily Smull.

Eight Cavaliers accounted for the team's 13 hits on the day, with Schell going 4-4, while Smull and Gallagher recording two base knocks. Giordano and Gallagher scattered five hits in the pitcher's circle and combined for seven strikeouts in five innings.

Clarks Summit jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap, scoring a run in the bottom of the first.  The Cavaliers answered in the second, as Savar scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Amber Dietrich.

A consistent Cabrini offense marked the scoring column in each of the second through sixth innings.  Sophomore Marissa Alpaugh and Giordano knocked in runs in the third, while junior Alexandria Ramos plated Dietrich in the fourth.

The Cavaliers erupted for four runs in the top of the fifth on the strength of five singles. Sophomore Taylor Franchville notched a pair of RBI's with a single to left, while Ramos and Schell recorded two out RBI's.

Franchville added her third RBI, a career high, in the sixth, as her sacrifice fly scored senior Taylor Mack.

Junior Jenna Rodriguez controlled the Defenders from the pitcher's circle, scattering three hits over four plus innings. Smull also tossed two innings of hitless ball.

Ramos and Savar matched season highs with three hits in the win, while Schell added two.

The Cavaliers will step out of conference play on Wednesday, as No. 23 Lebanon Valley (15-5) visits Cabrini Field.  The nonconference doubleheader is scheduled for 3pm.
