Late Comeback Falls Short for Women's Lacrosse

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini women's lacrosse team nearly erased a four goal second half deficit before its late rally fell short, as the Cavaliers suffered a 17-15 loss to Rowan University today at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

The loss snapped the Blue and White's eight game win streak and dropped Cabrini to 9-3 overall, while the Profs improved to 7-3.

Both teams were on their offensive games, as they combined or 79 shots, including a combined 25 free position shots.

Sophomore Avery Murphy matched a season high with six points including five goals on 19 shots to go with a team high six draw controls.  Junior Jackie Neary filled the stat sheet, pairing career highs of four goals and six caused turnovers with five ground balls.

Junior Sasha Wozniak and sophomore Liz Hoeffner paired two goals each and joined junior Gabby Lee with two caused turnovers.  Senior Jess Breuning added five ground balls, four caused turnovers and three draw controls.

Despite the loss, senior goaltender Megan Barlow came up big with a season high 10 saves, two ground balls and a caused turnover.

Both teams played a very even first half, one that included five ties and a pair of lead changes.  With the score tied at 6-6, the Profs grabbed some control of the action. Rowan scored the final three goals of the first half to take a 9-6 lead at the break.

The teams exchanged goals over the first nine minutes of the second half before Rowan sophomores Reese Parr and Maddie Bray converted free position shots in a 40 second span, expanding their lead to 13-9.

Minutes later, trailing 15-11 the Cavaliers mounted a comeback.  Bruening's unassisted goal cut the deficit to three with just under 12 minutes to play. At the 7:36 mark, Hoeffner hit Murphy for a goal before Wozniak's free position goal pulled the and White to within 15-14 with 6:05 to play.

The Profs briefly stopped Cabrini's scoring run, but Neary's free position shot cut the Cavaliers' lea back to 16-15 with 66 seconds on the clock. The Cavaliers could not control the ensuing draw, as Rowan sealed the victory with 40 seconds to play with the game's final goal.

Senior Ali Herbert scored five goal to lead eight Rowan goal scorers. Gretz finished the day with three goals and nine draw controls, while sophomore Liz Kramer paired two goals, four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Junior goaltender Erin Horner recorded 18 saves in the win.
