Strong Second Half Leads to Men's Soccer Victory

RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini men's soccer team improved to 2-0 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference with today's 3-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy University at Edith Robb Dixon Field.

With the win, the Cavaliers improved to 2-7-1 overall, while the Griffins fell to 0-9-1 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Junior Jared Irwin put the Blue and White ahead in the 15th minute, as the junior collected a long pass from classmate Matt Ochman and beat the Gwynedd Mercy senior goaltender Ryan Oyola for his second goal of the season.

Despite seeming to control the ball for much of the opening 45 minutes, the Blue and White recorded just four first half shots and earned just one corner kick, but held a slim 1-0 lead at the break.

Cabrini turned up its pressure as the teams took the pitch for the second half. The pressure paid immediate dividends, as the Blue and White recorded the first of its 16 second half shots just 45 seconds after the whistle.

The Cavaliers continued to press for a second goal, never really allowing the Griffins to create any rhythm.  The pressure finally paid off in the 87th minute, as senior Ben Roda served a corner kick into the Griffins' penalty area.

Oyola misplayed the service and Irwin was in the right spot to put the ball in the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Neither the 2-0 lead or the time left in the game slowed the Cavaliers. In the game's final minute, sophomore Dani Acevedo's pass found senior Xavier Young, who slid the ball past Oyola for the senior's first goal of the season.

The Cavaliers recorded a season-high 20 shots on the day, with sophomore Andre Justin's four leading the way, while Roda and Irwin added three each.

Sophomore goaltender Mike Gould was called on for a pair of saves to secure his second shutout of the season.

Six Griffins accounted for the club's six shots, while Oyola recorded four saves.

Cabrini will return to action on Tuesday night, when it makes the trip to Keystone College. Game time is slated for 7pm in La Plume, PA.
