Radnor, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team reeled off their 11th consecutive victory this evening with a thrilling 89-83 overtime triumph over the visiting Widener University Pride.
Freshman
Kate Lannon proved to have the hot hand tonight as the rookie sank a career high five three pointers off of just 10 attempts as she led the Blue and White with 24 points in 26 minutes. In fact, over her last six contests Lannon has hit 16 long balls on 32 attempts, a blistering 50% from beyond the arc. Sophomore
Meghan Matthews fell just two points shy of matching her career high of 23 points, while also pulling in seven rebounds. Juniors
Nomi Washington and
Sabrina Hackendorn hauled in 10 and nine rebounds, respectively while also combining for 11 points.
The Blue and White battled back from a slow start in which they missed their first four shots and committed two turnovers in the first four minutes of play. The visiting Pride took advantage as they jumped out to a 17-9 lead with three minutes left in the quarter. Senior
Kate Skalski responded with a three ball to briefly cut the deficit to five, but a three from Widener senior Nikki Petri put the Pride back up seven. Cabrini would head to the second quarter trailing 22-15.
After the Pride extended their lead to a game high 12 points less than a minute into the second, the Blue and White ripped off a 15-to-1 run to take the 30-28 lead with 3:06 left in the half. A three from sophomore
Cassidy Gallagher coupled with a pair of lay ups from Matthews and a pair of steals from Washington highlighted the Cavs momentum swinging run. The Blue and White would head into the intermission holding a 31-30 lead.
The Pride seemed to regain control late during the third quarter of play after swapping baskets for the first half of the quarter. Fueled by a deep ball from senior Allison Gallagher, Widener opened up a seven point lead thanks to a 7-to-2 run across a minute and a half to give the Pride a 52-45 lead with a minute left in the third. Lannon answered the call for the Cavs, however as she drilled one of four second half threes with 42 second left to send the Cavs into the fourth quarter down by just four.
A huge three from Widener sophomore Madison Ireland to tie the game with 15 second to play highlighted a back and forth fourth quarter that featured 11 lead changes. Unable to settle things in regulation, the two teams headed to overtime tied at 72.
After a free throw from Widener sophomore Devan Rimmer put the Pride up one, freshman
Lexi Edwards followed up a Hackendorn layup with a steal off Ireland and a fastbreak finish to give the Cavs the three point lead with 4:15 left. Widener cut the Cabrini lead back down to one thanks to a pair of free throws from Rimmer, but that is as close as they would get. Solid free throw shooting down the stretch from the Blue and White sealed the win for the Cavs - their 11th in a row.
Gallagher led the way for the visiting Pride as the senior finished with a game high 27 points and added eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals.
With the victory Cabrini moves to 13-2 overall and stays put a 6-0 in the CSAC. They will get a chance to pick up an important conference victory on Wednesday, January 17 when they host first place Neumann University at 6pm.
