Women's Basketball Moves to First Place in CSAC with 60-54 Victory Over Neumann

Radnor, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team moved to first place in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) after tonight's 60-54 victory over rival Neumann University.

Junior Nomi Washington led the charge for the Blue and White as she finished with a team high 16 points, while adding seven rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Meghan Matthews tallied 13 points, marking the fourth time out of her last five games she has hit the double digit threshold. Freshman Lexi Edwards added 10 points after hitting 6-of-8 from the charity stripe, while junior Sabrina Hackendorn led the team with eight rebounds and chipped in six points.

The Blue and White opened the game with an 8-to-0 run sparked by a three ball from Lannon and extended their lead to a quarter high nine points after a layup from Matthews to make it 16-7 with 15 seconds left. A deep three from Neumann senior Lauren Legler as time expired cut the Cavs' lead to 16-10 heading into the second.

An and-one from junior Gaby Jones put the Cavs back up nine to open the second quarter, but the Knights answered in a big way with an 11-to-1 run that spanned nearly four minutes to take the 21-20 lead. A Washington jumper ended the Neumann run and put the Cavs back on top in the process. The final four minutes featured five lead changes, but was highlighted by sophomore Cassidy Gallagher's three in the closing minute of action to give the Blue and White a 27-25 lead heading into the break.

The Cavaliers came out of the half in rhythm as they reeled off a 9-to-2 run as Hackendorn, Matthews, Edwards and Washington all netted baskets to put them up 36-27. A quick 5-to-0 spurt in favor of the Knights cut the Cavs lead back to 36-33 with just over three minutes left in the quarter. A late layup from freshmen Ashley Tutzauer gave the Cavs a 40-34 lead heading into the final stanza.

After the Blue and White extended their lead to eight off a trey from Matthews, the Knights nearly tied things up thanks to a 6-to-0 run. Holding just a two point lead with six minutes remaining, Washington drilled her lone three of the game to put Cabrini up 50-45. Neumann would get as close as two points two separate times in the remaining five minutes of play, but clutch free throw shooting down the stretch never allowed the Knights to reclaim the lead.

Neumann junior Nafisa Saunders tallied a game high 22 points, while adding four rebounds and three steals.

With the win the Cavs push their streak to 12 games and more importantly improve to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in the CSAC. As mentioned the Blue and White now sit atop the CSAC standings thanks to tonight's victory. The Cavs will next take the court on Sunday, January 21st when they travel to Marywood University. Game time is slated for 2pm.
