Scranton, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team picked up their 15th win of the season this afternoon with a 74-69 decision over Marywood University.
Freshman
Lexi Edwards exploded for a career high 31 points in the win, marking her fourth consecutive game with at least 10 points. Classmate
Kate Lannon was the only other Cavalier to reach double digits as the freshman finished with 10 points, four rebounds, four blocks and three assists in 16 minutes of action.
Junior
Nomi Washington led the team with six assists, while also adding nine points. Junior
Sabrina Hackendorn finished with a team high eight rebounds and chipped in eight points.
After a tightly contested first quarter that featured a pair of lead changes, the Cavs headed into the second trailing just 11-10 thanks to a late Edwards layup. Back-to-back threes from Edwards opened up the second quarter and moved the Cavs in front 16-11.
A 11-to-2 run followed for the Blue and White, as five different Cavaliers found the bottom of the net, led by sophomore
Meghan Matthews' three points. The Pacers responded with back-to-back threes, however to cut the Cabrini lead to just three points at 27-24. A late trey from Pacers' freshman Aryah Aungst with 11 seconds left made it a three point game as Cabrini went to the half with a 34-31 lead.
The Blue and White managed to put just enough distance on the scoreboard between themselves and the Pacers during the third quarter, courtesy of four three pointers coming off the hands of Edwards, Lannon (x2), and fellow rookie
Kate King, as they extended their lead to 10 points at 56-46.
The Cavs opened up a game high 14 point lead with seven minutes left in the final stanza off a jumper from Washington before the Pacers mounted a furious comeback attempt. Sparked by a three from senior Lisa Steakin, Marywood rattled off an 18-to-6 run that spanned nearly six minutes to claw to within two points with just 56 seconds left. As they have done so well this year though, the Blue and White converted on 6-8 late free thrown attempts to secure the conference victory.
With the win, Cabrini improves to 15-2 on the season and stays perfect at 8-0 in CSAC play. They also move to within one game of their longest winning steak since the 2014-15 season when the Cavs won 14 in a row. They will next take the hardwood on Wednesday, January 24th when they host Cairn University at 6pm.
