Men's Basketball Falls On the Road to Neumann, 92-83

Aston, PA - The Cabrini men's basketball team came up just short this evening against the Neumann Knights as they fell by a 92-83 final.

The Knights spoiled a record setting evening for Cabrini senior Deryl Bagwell who became the latest Cavalier to join the 1,000 point club after he finished with 17 points and added six rebounds and four assists.

Senior Tyheim Monroe paced the Cavalier offense with his 16th double-double of the season as he paired 23 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman DJ Smith continued his hot shooting from beyond the arc, knocking down 6-of-10 threes en route to 18 points. Sophomore Keith Blassingale rounded out the Cavs in double figures as he finished with 15 points and two steals.

After a tightly contested opening 10 minutes that featured nine lead changes, Monroe evened the score at 28 a piece with a deep three and an assist from freshman Trey Smith. The Knights jumped back in front on their ensuing possession however, as senior Billy Cassidy answered with a three of his own.

The Cassidy trey sparked a 12-to-3 run for the Knights that spanned nearly seven minutes and put Neumann up 43-32 with 1:38 to play in the half. Back-to-back threes from DJ Smith in the final 90 seconds, however sent the Blue and White into the break trailing by just seven, 45-38.

The Knights came out of the half firing as they quickly rattled off an 11-to-4 run to extend the lead to a game high 14 points at 56-42.

The Blue and White clawed their way back over the final 10 minutes as Bagwell ignited a 12-to-4 run with a jumper that marked his 1,000th point and ended with a layup from Blassingale to pull the Cavs to within two with just under a minute to play. That is unfortunately as close as the Cavs would come, however as the Knights converted on a pair of late layups and hit 4-of-4 free throws down the stretch to pull away and secure their eighth conference victory of the season.

With the loss, the Blue and White drop to 14-3 overall and 9-2 in the CSAC. They will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday, January 24th when they host Cairn University at Nerney Field House. Game time is slated for 8pm.
