Field Hockey Season Ends on OT Goal in Atlantic East Tournament

ASTON, PA – The Cabrini field hockey team mounted an impressive second half comeback and scored in the final minute of regulation to send today's game into overtime, but an overtime goal ended the Blue and White's season in the first round of the Atlantic East Conference tournament.

The Cavaliers' 4-3 overtime loss closed the team's season with an overall mark of 4-13.

Cabrini fell behind in the game's early minutes, as Neumann marked the scoring column in the seventh and 15th minutes. Despite matching the Knights' four first half shots, the Cavaliers could not find the back of the cage and trailed 2-0 at the halftime break.

Head coach Jackie Neary refocused the Cavaliers at the half, as the team wasted little time mounting its comeback.

Junior Katie Kucia put the Blue and White on the board in the 38th minute, converting a pass from freshman Kaitlyn Martin.

Six minutes later, Neumann regained its two goal cushion on Chelsea Kulesza's second goal of the night.

The deficit did not stop the Cavaliers' resolve, as Martin cut into the lead in the 49th minute after a pass from sophomore Trisha Billig.

Cabrini pressed to even the score but could not solve the Neumann defense over the next 19 minutes.

As the clock turned to the 70th minute, the Cavaliers' pressure finally pair off, as junior Britany Morello evened the score with 41 seconds to play.

The Cavaliers posted one final shot attempt, but it was swatted away by Knight's goaltender Lizzie Yu sending the game to overtime.

Cabrini continued its pressure into the overtime period, as the Cavaliers forced two penalty corners early in the extra period. Shots by freshman Allison Martin and Billig were again saved by Yu.

With just under three minutes to play in overtime, Neumann forced its first penalty corner in overtime and made it count. Cabrini's junior goaltender Devon Scharf was in position for a save on Sam Picker's shot, but the ball returned to Picker's stick for the game-winner.

The Cavaliers had one of their best offensive performances of the season in today's defeat, as their nine penalty corners marked a season high, while the 16 shots were just two off the season high.

Sophomore Gabby Thompson led the Blue and White with five shots, two more than Billig, while Morrello, Allison Martin and Kaitlyn Martin recorded two each. Scharf finished the game with five saves.

Kulesza and Picker recorded three shots each, while Yu posted eight saves.

Tonight's loss also marked the final collegiate appearances for Cabrini's four seniors, Erin Anzideo, Katie Heck, Kucia and Scharf. As a group, these ladies have led Cabrini to 36 victories, including a 18-8 record in conference games and two conference championships.
