RADNOR, PA – The Cabrini volleyball team secured its place in Sunday's semifinal round of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament with this morning's 3-0 victory over Neumann University at Nerney Field House.
The Blue and White's 25-20, 25-23, 25-17 win improved the club to 23-10 on the season, while the Knights' saw their season end with a 17-17 mark.
The Cavaliers will New York University tomorrow morning at 11am in the tournament's semifinal round, after the Violets topped Misericordia 3-0. Sunday's second semifinal pits Lebanon Valley College and McDaniel College and is slated for 2pm. The semifinal winners will meet in the championship match at 5pm.
Junior
Katrina Shelly paced the Cavaliers today, pairing 13 kills and 11 digs for her first double-double of the season. Senior
Emily Shannon also tallied a double dip, scoring 10 kills and 11 digs.
Freshman
Hannah Dalton added nine kills, while freshman
Amelia Ballard posted a career best 31 assists. Senior
Ashley Shannon earned team-high honors with 15 digs, while freshman
Gina Custer added 10.
The Cavaliers built a four point lead midway through the opening set, but the Knight slowly battled back to take a 17-16 lead. A pair of Neumann attack errors returned the lead to Cabrini and it never looked back, taking the first set.
The Knights grabbed the momentum early in the second set, building a 10-6 advantage. Cabrini kept the score within reach, eventually leveling the score at 16. Neumann regained its two point lead before the Blue and White reeled off four consecutive points to take a 21-19 lead. Cabrini maintained the lead, riding its two point cushion to a second set victory.
The teams exchanged the lead in the third set, but with the score tied at 10-10, the Cavaliers took control of the action. A 4-0 spurt established a lead the Knights could not overcome. Neumann pulled within 16-15 before Cabrini notched nine of the match's final 11 points.
Junior Melanie Malseed led the Knights with 10 kills and 16 digs, while senior Rachael Hoffman added eight kills. Junior Haley Glah notched a match-high 17 digs.
NYU defeats Misericordia 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-18)
Senior Nazzerine Waldon led the Violets (20-16) with eight kills and 10 digs, while freshman Abby Ausmus scored a match-high nine kills. Senior Katie Goyette and freshman Stella Alverson combined for 25 assists, while sophomore Jacqueline Kupeli notched 16 digs.
Junior Jassmine Watson and sophomore Sarah Pool led the Cougars (26-11) with eight kills each, with Watson leading the team with 13 kills, three more than senior Kaitlin Wheeler.
Lebanon Valley outlasts Westminster 3-2 (25-12, 18-25, 25-13, 19-25, 16-14)
Senior Jess Attief powered the Dutchmen (19-12), as they advanced to Sunday's semifinals with a thrilling five set win over the Titans. Freshman Reily Shelly and sophomore Jayna Class added double-doubles, combining for 21 kills and 34 digs. Fellow sophomore Jensen Burnheimer directed the offense with 48 assists and 13 digs, while classmate Kaitlyn Reed scored a team high 39 digs.
Junior Reilly DeGeorge led the Titans (30-4), who were looking for their second consecutive ECAC title, with 13 kills and 25 digs, while senior Delaney Sexton matched her 13 kills. Classmate Shanna Daniels also notched a double dip, pairing 27 assists and 13 digs. Senior Rachel Moore earned match-high honors with 41 digs in the loss.
McDaniel tops Penn State Behrend 3-1 (25-16, 25-21, 19-25, 25-15)
McDaniel (22-8) kept its season going on the strength of sophomore Marlowe Embry's match-high 14 kills. Senior Lauren Wells added eight kills adn 14 assists, while sophomore Gayle Edelstein chipped in with 17 helpers. Senior Taylor Bauman earned match-high honors with 20 digs.
Junior Alex Para led the Lions (20-11) with 10 kills, one more than freshman Kristin Reiland. Senior Lexi Irwin recorded a double-double wih 29 assists adn 11 digs, while sophomore Madison Clapper scored 16 digs.
