Women's Basketball Edged by Rival Eastern in Season Opener

RADNOR, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team opened their season with a hard fought 69-55 loss to cross road rival Eastern University in the annual Battle of Eagle Road.

The Cavaliers struggled to find breathing room as the Eagles' defense limited the Blue and White to just 24.6 percent shooting, including a 14.8 percent mark in the first half, and forced 22 turnovers. While the Cabrini defense forced 23 turnovers of its own, the Eagles found success around the hoop highlighted by 14 fast break points and a 41.4 percent clip from the field.

Offensively, the Blue and White were paced by sophomore Kate Lannon and senior Nomi Washington, both of which netted 13 points. Lannon also tied senior Gaby Jones for the team lead with six rebounds.

Sophomore Lexi Edwards added 10 points, including hitting 6-of-8 from the charity stripe, while junior Meghan Matthews and sophomore Ashley Tutzauer chipped in six and five points, respectively.

Eastern jumped out to a 5-0 lead over the first four minutes of play before Edwards put the Cavs on the board with an easy lay in. A lay up from Tutzauer followed by a triple from junior Cassidy Gallagher put the Cavs up 7-5 mid way through the first, but it would mark the Cavaliers only lead of the game.

Eastern would retake the lead just before the end of the first quarter and extend their cushion to a 24-17 advantage heading into the intermission.

The Blue and White would trim the Eagles' lead back to 33-30 with just over two minutes left in the third quarter, but an 11-2 run from Eastern put the visitors back up double digits at 44-32.

The Eagles would push their lead up to a game high 17 points at the five minute mark and coast to the eventual 69-55 final.

Eastern's Regie Robinson finished with a game high 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Eagles.

Following tonight's action, the Cavaliers move to 0-1 on the season, but will be back in action this Friday, November 16th, when they travel to Swarthmore, PA for the Swarthmore College Tip-Off Tournament. The Blue and White are slated to take on Wesleyan University at 7pm.
