ROCHESTER, NY – The Cabrini men's basketball team scored its first win of the 2018-19 season today, as the Cavaliers topped Houghton College 90-73 in the consolation game of the Chuck Rensler Invitational at the University of Rochester.
Five Cavalier scored at least eight points in the win over the Highlanders, with freshman
Voshon Mack leading the way with 20 points and 14 rebounds in 35 minutes of action.
Despite being limited to just 21 minute, senior
Anthony Wright-Downing hit 9-13 from the field, pairing 19 points and nine boards, earning All-Tournament Team honors. Sophomore
DJ Smith drained 5-10 from three point range en route to 17 points.
The Blue and White broke the game open midway through the first half, as senior
Alsmith Saintilus, sophomore
Brice Parks and Smith hit three consecutive three pointers to turn a 19-18 lead into a 28-18 advantage.
The Cavaliers led by as many as 12 points in the first half and carried a 46-36 lead into the half after a Smith triple at the buzzer.
Cabrini hit north of .550 from the field, including 8-15 from three point range in the opening 20 minutes today, after shooting just .300 from the field in the first half of their opening two contests.
The Highlanders mounted a comeback attempt in the second half, using an 8-0 spurt to pull within 75-53 with 12:17 to play. The Blue and White responded with a 7-0 run of its own, as a Mack bucket pushed the lead back to 10 points at the 10:29 mark.
Mack provided the Cabrini punch in the second half, as the rookie shot 7-8 from the field for 16 points and 11 rebounds, including five on the offensive end, in the second half alone.
Sophomore
Billy Warren chipped in with nine points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots, while classmate
Trey Smith posted a career high nine assists.
Dylan Lambert led Houghton (0-3) with 29 points, while Jordan Holmes added 19 in the loss.
The Cavaliers will return to Nerney Field House on Tuesday, as they play host to former Colonial States Athletic Conference rival Rosemont College (1-3). Tip is slated for 8pm, following the women's game.
