Game Recap: Basketball (Women) |

Women's Basketball Falls Late in 61-57 Loss to Goucher

SWARTHMORE, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team battled until the end, but couldn't hold on as the Goucher College Gophers held on to narrowly escape with a 61-57 final.

Sophomore Lexi Edwards netted a game high 17 points, while adding seven rebounds and a pair of blocks to lead the Blue and White. Classmate Kate Lannon added 13 points and five assists, while senior Nomi Washington secured her third straight game with double figures after chipping in 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Junior Cassidy Gallagher rounded out the Cavs in double figures with 10 points of her own.

The Gophers found success inside against the Cabrini defense as they outscored the Blue and White 32-16 with points coming in the paint. In total, Goucher shot 42 percent from the field, highlighted by a nearly 46 percent effort in the second half.

Cabrini stole the early lead thanks to a lay in from Washington just four seconds into the action. A pair of triples from Lannon and Gallagher pushed the Cavs' lead to 8-2 after the opening four minutes of play. An 8-to-0 run from the Gophers, however flipped the score in favor of the Blue and Yellow, 11-8. Goucher would head into the second quarter with a narrow 15-14 lead.

A layup from Washington followed by a trey from Edwards highlighted a second quarter that saw Cabrini retake the lead, 26-23, heading into the intermission.

A 17-to-13 third quarter in favor of the Gophers, however, made it a 40-39 Goucher lead heading into the final stanza. A pair of free throws from Edwards to open the fourth briefly gave the Cavs a 41-40 lead with 9:41 left to play, before a pair of layups from Goucher's Anise Williams and Nicole Walord gave the Gophers a two point cushion.

Goucher would push their lead to six, at 49-43, with 4:36 to play, but the Cavaliers would not go down with out a fight. A pair of triples from Gallagher gave the Cavs new life, sparking a 14-to-8 run for the Blue and White and tying the game at 57 a piece with under a minute to go.

Forced to foul, Cabrini would send the Gophers to the charity stripe looking to extend the game, but Goucher was able to knock down four pressure free throws to seal the narrow 61-57 victory.

Following todays game, the Blue and White move to 1-2 overall. They will look to even their record this Tuesday, November 20th, when they host Rosemont College at Nerney Field House. Game time is slated for 6pm.
