GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team secured their first Atlantic East Conference victory this afternoon thanks to a tight 66-65 win over the hosting Gwynedd Mercy Griffins.
Senior
Nomi Washington continued her hot play for the Blue and White as she netted a game high 19 points on 8-of-16 from the field, while also adding six steals and four rebounds. Following her six steals today, Washington has tallied at least four swipes in five consecutive games.
Sophomore
Kate Lannon was the only other Cavalier in double figures as she finished with 13 points, as well as five steals of her own. In total, the Cavs forced 25 turnovers, with 17 of them being steals.
Washington's classmate, Gabby Jones, chipped in seven points, while sophomore's
Ashley Tutzauer and
Lexi Edwards, along with freshman
Kirsten Searcy, added five points each.
Following a first half that saw the Griffins claim a 34-28 lead, the Blue and White turned up the defensive pressure on the Griffins to open the second stanza. After a jumper and a triple from Washington and Lannon, respectively, to cut the Griffins lead to 34-33, the Cavaliers forced a pair of key turnovers to help keep the Gwyneed Mercy offense at bay.
As they've shown in years past, however, the Griffins quickly regained their offensive rhythm to the tune of a 15-to-7 run to push their lead to nine points with just over 5:30 left in the game.
With their backs against the wall, the Cavalier offense answered with a huge 17-to-6 run over the next four minutes to steal the lead at 63-61. A key triple from freshman
Dani Tyrell with 50 seconds to play put an exclamation point on the Cavs' run as it swung the lead in their favor.
The Griffins would answer with a three pointer of their own on the ensuing possession to retake the lead at 64-63, but a layup from Lannon with 20 seconds to go put the Cavs back up by one.
After junior
Cassidy Gallagher hit the back end of a pair of free throw attempts with seven seconds to play to make it a 66-64 game, the Griffins would have one final chance to tie with a trip to the charity stripe and five seconds on the clock.
After sinking the first one, the Griffins Monet McGorda's second shot missed the mark and secured the Cavaliers thrilling Atlantic East victory.
Following today's action, the Cavs improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play. They will look for their second straight win when they host Elizabethtown College on Tuesday, December 4th at 7pm.
