2nd Half Spurt Sends Men's Basketball to 84-68 Loss

RADNOR, PA – Three Cavaliers scored in double figures, but it wasn't enough, as the Cabrini men's basketball team suffered an 84-68 loss to York College tonight at Nerney Field House.

The Blue and White's sixth consecutive loss dropped the team to 2-8 on the season.

Senior Anthony Wright-Downing led the Cavaliers with 19 points on 9-13 shooting and eight rebounds. Freshman Voshon Mack hit seven of his nine shots for 15 points, while sophomore DJ Smith added 13 points.

Both teams played a very even first half, a frame that included seven ties and 10 lead changes.

Despite leading for much of the first half, the Spartans could not extend their advantage beyond six points. York carried its lead into the half, as Cabrini hit the locker room trailing 40-37.

The Cavaliers shot north of .450 in the first half, but connected on just 2-11 from three point range. Meanwhile, the Spartans drained seven on their 10 long distance attempts, hit 7-10 from the free throw line and turned their eight offensive rebounds into 10 second half points.

York took control of the game in the early minutes of the second half, opening the stanza on a 10-3 run to push its lead to 50-40 at the 15:42 mark. Their lead swelled to 53-42 before the Cavaliers responded.

Smith and classmate Trey Smith scored all eight points, as the Blue and White used a 51 second 8-0 run to climb back to within 53-50.

The Spartans quickly regained the momentum, scoring the next 11 points, while holding the Cavaliers scoreless over the next 3:32. York pushed its lead to a game-high 20 points with 5:12 to play, after shooting 9-13 from the field over a 10 minute stretch.

Cabrini shot just .433 after the break, including 2-9 from three point range, and committed 10 of its 18 turnovers. The Cavaliers also fell on the glass, as the Spartans earned a 22-14 second half rebound advantage.

Senior Jason Bady led four Spartans (7-4) in double figures, pairing 24 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Jared Wagner added 18 points, five boards, five assists and five steals.

The Cavaliers will look to regroup before heading the Washington & Lee University on Dec. 28-29. Cabrini will open the W&L Holiday Tournament against TCNJ (5-5) at 4:30pm in Lexington City VA.
