LEXINGTON, VA – The Cabrini men's basketball team returned from an eight day break, but could not reverse its fortunes, as it suffered a 92-74 loss to The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in the first round of the Washington & Lee University Holiday Tournament.
The Cavaliers (2-9) will return to action tomorrow at 1pm, as it will face the host Generals (7-4) in Saturday's consolation game.
Senior
Anthony Wright-Downing paced the Blue and White, pairing 16 points and 15 rebounds. Classmate
Alsmith Saintilus added 14 points, while sophomore
DJ Smith and freshman
Voshon Mack chipped in with nine points each.
The Lions broke an 8-8 deadlock with a 16-4 run, pushing their lead to 24-12 midway through the opening period. A 14-6 Cabrini spurt pulled the Cavaliers back to within 30-26 two minutes later, but TCNJ wasted little time in re-establishing its double digit cushion.
Despite shooting just .350 in the first half, the Cavaliers trailed 48-37 after a first half that saw TCNJ connect on 13-25 from three point range.
The Blue and White looked to make its move in the second half, but could not find its shooting touch after the break. The Cavaliers shot just .286 from the field after the break, including 2-13 from beyond the three point arc.
Cabrini committed a season low six turnovers and grabbed a season high 45 rebounds, but it was not enough to overcome a TCNJ club that drained 21 three pointers, just one shy of its program record.
Randy Walko led the Lions (6-5) with 32 points, hitting 10-18 from three point range, while Niall Carpenter and Jordan Grover added 11 points each and combined for 2- boards.
TCNJ will face Centre College (10-1) in Saturday's championship game, after the Colonels topped host Washington & Lee 93-85 in today's other opening round match-up.
Centre led by as many as 18 points in the first half, but W&L rallied to even the score at 77 before the Colonels pulled away in the final minutes.
Art Walker and Jacob Bates combined for 51 points in the victory, while Roy McMillan paired 31 points and 15 boards for the Generals.
