BETHLEHEM, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team picked up win number six on the season following a 72-61 final over SUNY New Paltz on day one of the Moravian College Steel Club Classic.
A big second quarter fueled the Cavs win as the Blue and White outscored the Hawks by a 26-8 margin and held a commanding 38-26 lead at the intermission.
Cabrini was led offensively by senior
Nomi Washington, who set a new career high with 27 points. The versitle guard also added four rebounds and three steals in 32 minutes of action.
Sophomore
Kate Lannon also crossed the 20 point plateau as she tallied 21 points and six rebounds, all without committing a turnover. Junior
Cassidy Gallagher (seven points), junior
Meghan Matthews (five points), and sophomore
Caitlin King (five points) rounded out the Cavs with at least five points.
Following a first quarter in which New Paltz led 18-12, the Blue and White rattled off a 17-2 run to open the quarter to steal the lead at 29-20. Four three pointers, split between Gallagher, Lannon, and Washington, highlighted the momentum shifting run for the Cavs. In total the Blue and White drilled seven triples in the quarter, including six in a row to end the quarter with a 38-26 lead.
The second half featured a more balanced attack from both teams as the Blue and White never managed to extend their lead, but they also never allowed the Hawks to pull to within striking distance. In fact, the Cavs' lead in the fourth quarter never dipped below 11 points.
Lindsay Bettke, Marion Dietz, and Rachel Simon all tallied 12 points to lead New Paltz, while Dietz paved the way with six rebounds.
As mentioned, the Blue and White even their record at 6-6 following today's play. They will cap the Steel Club Classic on Monday and will face the winner of Delaware Valley University and Moravian College. Game time has yet to be announced.
