Cavaliers Fall to Greyhounds in Steel City Classic Finale

BETHLEHEM, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team fell to the hosting Moravian College Greyhounds in the Steel City Classic finale this afternoon following an 83-69 final.

Despite the loss, senior guard Nomi Washington achieved a career milestone as she became just the 12th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points following her 15 point effort against the Greyhounds.

The veteran is posting career numbers this season as she leads the Blue and White with 15.8 points per game and five games with at least 20 points, highlighted by yesterday's 27 point performance against SUNY New Paltz.

Junior Meghan Matthews paced the Cavalier offense today, however, as she posted a team high 17 points on an efficient 5-of-9 from the field. The forward was just as effective at the charity stripe as she knocked down 7-of-10 attempts.

Sophomore Kate Lannon and Ashley Tutzauer rounded out the Cavs in double figures as they tallied 10 points each. Lannon added a team high eight rebounds. Classmate Caitlin King chipped in seven points and six assists.

The Blue and White jumped out to an early 7-4 lead following an and-one from sophomore Lexi Edwards, but the Moravian offense would respond with a 10-3 run to claim the 14-10 lead with four minutes left in the opening stanza. Cabrini would answer as they closed the quarter with an 8-2 run of their own to retake the lead at 18-16.

A triple from Edwards to open the second quarter would push the Cavs lead to five, their largest of the game, before the Greyhounds would even things at 25 a piece with 7:15 left in the half. A layup from Moravian's Nadine Ewald would break the tie and give the Greyhounds a 27-25 lead, a lead they would not relinquish.

The Blue and White would trim the hosts' lead to 45-41 following a layup from Washington early in the third quarter, but the four point deficit would be as close as the Cavs would come.

In total, three Greyhounds tallied at least 20 points, led by Ewald and Jennifer McClave's 21 points.

Following today's action, the Cavaliers move to 6-7 overall. They will close their nonconference schedule on Saturday, January 5th when they travel to Center Valley, PA to take on DeSales University. Game time is slated for 1pm.
