Slow First Half Dooms Cavs in Loss to Bulldogs

CENTER VALLEY, PA - The Cabrini women's basketball team couldn't overcome a slow start from the field in today's 71-39 loss to the hosting DeSales University Bulldogs in the final nonconference matchup of the season.

A first half in which the Blue and White shot just over 11 percent from the field loomed large as the Bulldogs were able to capitalize and build an early lead.

Sophomore Ashley Tutzauer led the Cavs offensively as the guard finished with a team high 13 points and six rebounds. Classmate Kate Lannon was the only other Cavalier to finish in double digits after tallying 11 points and matching Tutzuaer's six rebounds.

Senior Nomi Washington, who became just the 12th player in program history to reach the 1,000 point plateau in Monday's game against Moravian, was held in check by the Bulldog defense as she netted seven points and chipped in six rebounds. Junior Meghan Matthews and sophomore Lexi Edwards added three points a piece.

As mentioned, the Blue and White struggled out of the gate as DeSales opened the game on a 15-0 run to quickly jump ahead. A free throw from Matthews broke the Cavs scoring drought and started a 4-0 run to end the first quarter.

A triple from Tutzauer with 8:49 left in the second quarter gave the Cavs their first field goal to make it an 18-7 DeSales lead. The lead was briefly trimmed to nine points thanks to a pair of free throws from Lannon, but a three pointer from DeSales' Isabel Caruso pushed the lead back to 12 points.

The nine point deficit is as close as the Blue and White would come, unfortunately as the Bulldogs ended the quarter with an 11-5 run to push their lead to 31-16 at the intermission.

DeSales would go on to outscore the Cavs 40-23 in the second half en route to the aforementioned 71-39 final.

Samantha Shinkus paced the Bulldog's attack after pairing a game high 17 points and 15 rebounds to pick up the double-double.

Following today's action the Blue and White move to 6-8 overall. With their nonconference slate behind them, the Cavs will open Atlantic East play on Wednesday, January 9th against Marywood University at Nerney Field House. Game time is slated for 6pm.
