RADNOR, PA – After falling just short of the mark last season, the Cabrini men's basketball team reached the 20-win plateau with today's 88-83 win over Rosemont College at Nerney Field House.
The victory moved the Cavaliers to 20-3 overall and 14-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference. With two games remaining in the regular season, the Blue and White holds a 1.5 game lead in the standings and the inside track to home court advantage throughout the CSAC Tournament.
This marks the first time the team has reached the 20-win plateau since the 2013-14 season and the first time under head coach
Tim McDonald.
The Cavaliers displayed a balanced attack in today's win, as six players recorded at least nine points.
Senior
Tyheim Monroe led the way with 21 points and 13 rebounds for his 21st double-double of the season. Classmate
Deryl Bagwell fell just short of a double-dip, pairing 13 points and nine boards with four assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
Junior
Anthony Wright-Downing continued his solid play of late, dropping 18 points on 6-6 from the field, including 2-2 from three point range.
Both teams found their offensive rhythms in the early going, but a 9-4 spurt midway through the first half gave the Cavaliers a bit of breathing room, as a Wright-Downing triple put Cabrini ahead 30-23 at the 8:48 mark.
The Blue and White led by as many as 12 points in the first half, as it connected on 58.6% from the field. A pair of Monroe free throws sent the Cavaliers into the break with a seemingly comfortable 44-33 lead.
Cabrini extended is lead to 49-33 in the opening minute of the second half before the Ravens began their comeback.
Rosemont slowly chipped away at its deficit, slicing the Cabrini lead to 56-52 with 12:34 to play.
A Blue and White timeout refocused the Cavaliers, as they responded with a 17-4 run to build a 71-53 lead on freshman
DJ Smith's three at the 8:00 mark.
Despite Monroe's fast break lay-up pushing the lead to a game-high 19 points with 5:28 to play, the Ravens would not fold.
Over the past 22 games, the Cavaliers have proven to be very good in late game situations, but today, Cabrini could not find its mojo over today's final minutes.
After Monroe's bucket, Cabrini went 2-6 from the field and just 7-15 from the free throw line with five turnovers.
The miscues allowed the Ravens to make a late charge, pulling within five points on a three pointer by junior Jalil Myers with 29 seconds to play.
Sophomore
Keith Blassingale drained Cabrini's final two attempts at the charity stripe before Rosemont junior Jacob Simon added a pair of the Ravens.
Despite shooting 50% from the field in the second half, Cabrini went just 3-11 from the three point line and 11-23 from the free throw line.
Freshman
Trey Smith finished with 10 points and a team-high five assists, while Blassingale and classmate
Brett Foster added nine points each.
Myers finished with a monster effort with 27 points and 20 rebounds. Senior Mekhi Clemons added 15 points, while fellow senior Charles Presley paired 12 points and seven dimes.
The Cavaliers will hit the road on Wednesday, as they visit Immaculata University (13-10, 9-7 CSAC). Tip is slated for 8pm.
