Monroe, Wright-Downing Lead Cavaliers to Win at Immaculata

IMMACULATA, PA – The Cabrini men's basketball team clinched a first round bye in next week's Colonial States Athletic Conference tournament with tonight's 87-75 victory at Immaculata University.

The Blue and White's seventh consecutive win improved the team to 21-3 overall and 15-2 in league action. Cabrini remains one game ahead of Gwynedd Mercy atop the league standings with one game remaining for both teams.

The Cavaliers were led by senior Tyheim Monroe and junior Anthony Wright-Downing, who combined for 51 points and 32 rebounds.

Monroe recorded his fourth 20 point, 20 rebound performance of the season, pairing 26 points and 22 rebounds to go with seven assists and three steals.

Wright-Downing added a career high 25 points and 10 boards for his second double-double in his last three games. The junior has also scored north of 20 points in three of his last five outings.

The Blue and White got off to a hot start, scoring the first nine points of the game. The Mighty Macs battled back to take a slim 18-17 lead midway through the opening stanza. The lead was short lived, as the Cavaliers regained the lead two minutes later.

Cabrini created some separation from Immaculata in the final minutes of the half, as a 7-0 run pushed the cushion to 36-28 with three minutes left before the break.

The Cavaliers carried the eight point lead into the halftime break, despite shooting just 2-9 from three point range. Defensively, the Blue and White held Immaculata to just 1-11 from beyond the arc.

Cabrini pulled away early in the second half, as it used a 14-4 run to build a 58-40 lead on Wright-Downing's lay-up with 14:58 to play.

The Mighty Macs responded with a 16-4 run over the next five minutes, pulling within 62-56.

Sophomore Brett Foster scored five points on Cabrini's next two possessions, sparking a 16-2 run. A three pointer by sophomore Keith Blassingale extended the Cavaliers' lead to a game-high 78-58 with just 5:38 to play.

Blassingale and freshman Trey Smith finished with 11 points each and combined for nine boards, while senior Deryl Bagwell stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals.

Mike Piekarski topped the Mighty Macs (13-11, 9-8 CSAC) with 23 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots.

The Cavaliers will close the regular season on Saturday, as they celebrate Senior Day with a visit from Clarks Summit (1-23, 0-17 CSAC). Tip is slated for 1pm Nerney Field House.
