Butler Homers Twice in Cavs Season Opener Against Cardinals

Washington, PA - The Cabrini baseball team dropped a pair of hard fought games this evening to The Catholic University of America as the Cardinals topped the Cavs 3-2 in game one and 6-5 in game two.

Game One: Catholic 3, Cabrini 2
Redshirt freshman Nicholas Gares made his first start since February 27th of last season and tossed a gem in his four innings of work. Gares faced 18 batters and allowed six hits, one run (zero earned) and struck out six.

Junior Ryan Tracy was the lone Cardinal to get to Gares as his single to left scored classmate Bailey Lewis for an unearned run.

The Blue and White responded with two runs in the fourth thanks to an error from Tracy that allowed sophomore Vince Gares and senior Dylan Butler to score to give the Cavs the 2-1 advantage.

Lewis answered for Catholic in the sixth with a solo shot to even things at two apiece, while senior Brennan Cotter delivered the game winning run in the seventh off of junior Tyler Ronayne with a single through the right side to score the runner on second.

Game Two: Catholic 6, Cabrini 5
Game two was filled with a few more fireworks courtesy of Butler who took a page out of his 2017 season opener and launched not one, but two home runs. Butlers' first bomb came in the first and was of the two run variety to quickly give the Blue and White a 2-0 lead.

Catholic senior Anthony Ferlise cut the deficit in half in the next half inning with an RBI single to center to plate teammate Bailey Lewis.

Butler doubled down in the fourth with another two run shot again scoring senior Bret Kuchera for the 4-1 Cavalier advantage.

A big fifth inning for the Cardinals erased the Cavs lead as four runs crossed the plate to tie things up at five. Senior Jack Hennessy gave the Cardinals their second walkoff of the day as his single up the middle plated sophomore Cid Porter for the 6-5 win.

Cabrini will next take the diamond February 26th when they travel to Auburndale, FL to take on Grove City College for the Cavs first game of their spring break trip. Game time is slated for 11:30am.
